6.5 140 smk

I got 200 of these from my father in law and the shoot good in my 6.5-284 <.5 moa. I was wondering if they would be ok to shoot deer?

Never shot those but have fired thousands of the 142's. Have a sporter built in the 6.5x284 built with the same chamber as my competition rifles and have killed lots of hogs which are tough.

I never understood the true difference between the 140 and 142 SMK.

I use the 142's. But, I doubt that a deer would notice the difference if hit with either one at reasonable impact velocity.

Very different ogives and a somewhat modified boat tail, as I recall. In short, two distinctly different bullets, and the 142s are vastly superior in terms of BC. Sierra needed to do something to counter the Berger, JLK and custom 6.5s that were eating into that market,and the 142 was the result. The 140s should do okay for deer, but just be advised, these aren't really designed as hunting bullets.

I would advise against them on deer. I shot a number of them along with the 142smk and had dismall results on groundhogs with the 140. No expansion whatsoever with the 140. They performed drastically different that the 142. Also shot along side a fellow with a 6.5 Gibbs and he couldn't kill a groundhog with them either. The bullet would pencil through, the groundhog would run to its hole. Seeing those results, I never tried to shoot a deer with them.

It was a shame as they shot wonderfully out of my 6.5x284 as well. I switched to shooting AMAX's which are a phenomenal game bullet at those velocities and then switched to Bergers due only to the bc advantage. Both of those bullets work great.

The 140 smk will preform well on deer, I have some good pics of recovered bullets from deer out to 1070 yards. Under 900 foot pounds of impact energy they do not open up however I have photos of one that took a mule deer at 510 yards that preformed as well as ANY "hunting" bullet money can buy.

Why have you been using the 140's given the slightly better BC of the 142's?

Is it because you beleive they're better for hunting? Or, did you just happen to have them on hand?

My Father in law gave my the bullets for Christmas last year. I used them as an excuse to by the 6.5-284 I shot 5 three shot groups of bergers yesterday and couldn't get less than 1 moa. I think it was me and not the gun though.

Richard it is a simple answer....2950 fps,7fps e.s., shoots .3moa
