Hello everyone. I am looking for ideas on a gift for my father. He would love to have a semi auto 22 magnum. I was hoping I could get some advice/real world experience on a good make/model. I don't want to purchase something that he will be disappointed with. Thanks in advance for anything anyone has to say.

Magnum Research 10/22 magnum.

Ruger also made a magnum version of the 10/22 for a while but ceased production.

Try gunbroker.

Might I suggest you peruse the texashuntingforums classifieds. You might find a 597 magnum or two for sale. One is for a good price, but I can't bring myself to buy it right now.

I would agree with the 597's but after the trouble they've had with the .17 hmr's I wouldn't trust them. And I know there is a different between the .22 mag and .17 but I had a 597 in .17 ( and I loved it) but I saw the damage it had in 200-300 rounds. Especially if he plans to put ALOT of rounds through it I would rule out the 597.

It would crack cases and blow little shards of brass out the ejection port and into your face occasionally. But the real problem was inside the receiver. When I saw that remington had recalled them I took apart the receiver and the bolt had a hole in the underside of it. It wasnt huge but it was big enough for me to stop shooting it.

Txnub, I understand about the cost, but even a decent .22 mag bolt action rifle will be $250 and up. Mostly up. I've tried 3 Marlins, but none of them shot better than 2" @ 100yds when I got them. I tried 11 different brands and types of ammo in them to give them a chance, but gave up and got rid of them.

I haven't tried a Savage, but you're looking for a semi-auto anyway, so In my opinion, the discontinued Ruger 10-22 magnum is probably the best bet, but be prepared to spend at least $500 for a used one. If it's accurate, you're way ahead of the game. If not, the generous application of more money for a premium barrel, trigger, etc, will make an accurate rifle out of it. Unlike the 10-22 l/r's, the 10-22 magnums have steel receivers, a big advantage to me, and a good basis to assemble an accurate semiauto rifle on.

Years ago, H & R made a semiauto .22 mag, also discontinued, but I don't know anything about them.

In my opinion, the long-discontinued H & K Model 300 is the best of the semiauto .22 mags, but they're in the $1200 - $1500 range now, if you can find one. Also, clips for them are very hard to find, and are around $75 - $100 each.

To sum up, there isn't much avilable in a good semiauto .22 mag, but like Dust said, I also would search Gunbroker, Guns America, etc. to see what is available and for what price.

Good luck, Tom

Thanks Spec. I don't mind spending around $500. I like the idea of the 10-22 magnum. I've been eyeballing those for a while. I guess its time to do some shopping...

If you really want to impress him, find him a BRNO 611, very classy. in 22 Magnum. Hard to come buy, but very well worth it. Very nice wood and made all of steel. Never Malfunctions. I seen a couple on Gunbroker. I have one myself, with a Leupold VXIII 1.5x5 power, big game scope, parallax adjusted to 60 yards for rimfire use and a set of LYNX scope rings all steel.

CZ is best for new production. a little stiff on trigger is all.

remington is not the best shooter.

got your hookup for a ruger in minty condition local around me if the guy would ship. i don't know him but if you're interested i'll send you a link.
