Christensen Carbon 1 custom 300

Hey guys,

I went to the local gun shop the other day and saw that they have a Christensen Carbon Once Custom 300 Win Mag. I wanted to know what you're experiences where with these guns and if they are worth it? This one was priced in at $2k. From what I have seen looking around it seems to be a good deal.

Never owned one but if you search tis site most are not happy with them compared to other upper end rifles.

IMO you could build a lot more gun for $2000.00 then what you would be getting with a Christensen. They are little more than a Shilen barrel sleeve wrapped in carbon. You could invest the money into a custom build and have some left over for glass too. It's true some Christensen arms shoot very well. I just think that you could get more bang for your buck building your own and it would be brand new to boot.

I know a guy who has one in 300 rum couldnt get it to group he kept sending it back with no luck. The problem was it was machined so he had a long jump to the lands i can't remember how far of a jump but it was a long jump he started seating the bullets out a lot further it started grouping better. But for the cost he shouldnt have to go to so much troubleshooting to get it to shoot imo
i agree there is some fun & satisfaction to building your own plus it will probably cost less.
2 grand is a good deal i think they are much more new special ordered from the factory but i would still rather build than buy one for the cost.

I have tired to reload for 7 different ones. only one shot. Three went back twice with no luck. I would never touch one again.

If you want a Carbon wrapped barrel, then get one from ABS. I did and I love mine

I have two of them. One is a M77 action in 338 win mag with a 24" barrel and the Vias brake, it is in a older B&C stock. I love this rifle for hunting here in AZ, it is light and the barrel is not too long to maneuver thru the cedars and junipers. Accuracy is right around an inch if I shoot 225 gr slugs. Recoil is no prob, my wife shot her first Elk with it and has a fair amount of range time on it with no sniveling. The second is a rem action in my favorite caliber 7mm STW. I had them lighten the action/bolt and install a 26" barrel with the Vais brake, it is set in a H.S. sendero stock. The rifle will shoot 5/8" groups, but only with 140 gr Bergers or Interbonds. When I contacted them about the lack of performance with heavier bullets, I found out they had used a 1 in 11" twist barrel. This rifle was a learning experience and I now know to never assume anything, know exactly what you want and tell your builder that that is what you expect. All in all, I like the rifles they are light and have not had any failures, they are unbelievably loud and you wont want to shoot them without the brake. Good luck.

Well I will put a bit more thought into it and try and do some more research. What do you guys think of the round? Do you like the idea of a 300 Win Mag?

I was also thinking about getting a Kimber 8400 Advanced Tact. chambered in .308.

If you guys had to decide, what would you pick and why?

If your looking for something off the shelf you may want to look into a Cooper also. You could pick up a real nice rig for under $2000.00 there and I have yet to see one that did not have nice wood and was not a decent shooter.

For hunting a 300wm will pump a 208gr Amax out to 1k and still retain sufficient energy and velocity to kill your average deer or antelope. I will tell you what, an ultra lite rifle in 300wm with a heavy bullet is most definitely not my idea of Fun With a really good brake and good hearing protection, it would likely be ok. If you forget the hearing protection with a braked 300wm.... trust me you will only ever do it once! Loud is an understatement.

I used to own a Winchester Stainless Stalker 300wm with Boss. Sold it to my brother & law, but still reload for it, and occasionally shoot it. He is a big guy, but that thing POUNDS him. After about 10-12 rounds he is straight up done. I can usually go 25-30 rounds before I have to call it a day, even so it becomes a pretty tedious mental exercise each and every round.

I will be Re-barreling to a 7mmRM in my savage 111 here towards the end of the year. My rifle is anything but lite @ 16.5lbs. At the moment it is a ***** cat 6.5x55 BJAI!! Heh, it is a LOT more fun to put 50-100 rounds down range with it, than with that fire breathing 300wm! The 7mmRM will probably be right about at the top of my practice a-lot tolerance.
