.280 Rem. (Mid-Long Range) Build

I am entertaining the idea of 7mm on a LONG ACTION. What are your opinions on the .280 Rem (not AI, yet)? I am inquiring about the 168 or possibly the 180 grainers. I have already completed a 6.5 X 284 shooting the 140 and 142's....and a .243 shooting the 105 and 107's, so I was trying to "fill the niche" in a Wanting the velocities in the 2800+ range also. Is this feasible, possible, etc? My intent is clay birds/steel and occasionally deer sized game. Thoughts please............I guess I should ask about some load data and possible builds that are completed and performance of them. Thanks

How long of a barrel? My 24" .280 will put 160s over 2800, but I haven't shot anything heavier. My current load is 54.3 gr IMR 4350 under a 140 Accubond. Surprisingly, it is only going 2850 fps (other lots of this powder have driven this same bullet over 3000 fps), but I don't have any problem with it out to 600 yards. It drifts a little less than my service rifle with 82 gr Bergers. 5 MOA for a 10 mph full value wind. a 168 Berger at 2800 only drifts 3.5 MOA. Perhaps I may have to play with some.

By the way, I am building a long action 7 WSM for a long range deer rifle.

If you read through the entire thread, you will find my load data for several different bullets including the 168VLD which my rifle sends at 2850fps. The 180VLD is a bit too heavy for this cartridge.

I will probably start with a Krieger at 30-31" and hope to finish it at at least 28". I was "hoping" to get the 175''s or 180's to shoot primarily because of the B.C. THe 168's have a good B.C. also. I was thinking at least a 9 twist and was looking advice on IF I should seek a faster twist. That IS a nice rifle you built and if you don't mind me asking, what did Leupold charge for the turrent upgrade and reticle change?

I just paid $189.98 to have M1 turrets and a standard duplex reticle installed in a 6.5-20x50 LRT. It is really nice.

If you want to shoot the 175-180grain bullets, move up to the 7wsm or bigger. 280Rem will have a hard time pushing them at 2800+. 1:9 twist will work for everything from the 140's to the 180grain bullets.

Turrets were eighty or ninety dollars each and the reticle was ~$160.

My 280 is shooting the 168 bergers at 2940 with 57gr of imr 7828ssc seated in the lands 15 thou out of a 26" mcgowen barrel. This is 2 grains over bergers max but is not showing any signs of pressure in my rifle. i have shot the 180's but only about 2750 befor getting pressure signs.
