m&p 15-22

Hey everyone. I was wondering what you all have heard about the new m&p. I was thinking of picking up one for a squirrel gun/home defense. I live in California and this would be the only opportunity for me to play with the AR platform. Anyway, just wondering what everyone has heard "for instance is the quality actually there." Should be a great weapon very high qualty. Lots of guys use them as low cost tranning alternitive to 5.56 same weapon just more reliable than a 22 conversion for your AR.

As far as home defence with a 22lr I would think again. Additional the lowers are not interchangeable with any other ar pattern rifles.

I know what you mean about home defense, but I worry about using anything larger since I have neighbors on the other side of the wall. I figured that it would be a fine weapon. Smith and Wesson seems to do well always. Thanks for the input.

Have you read up much on barrier penatration? A fragmenting round from a 223 will pass through less material than a 9mm etc

too be honest, I've been so busy lately that I haven't really looked into it. I just assumed that anything close to a 5.56 "even if a fragmenting round" would have plenty of energy to pass through some thin drywall. Know any good articles that I could read on the matter?

I know most of the goverment tests have been conducted by the FBI. Im sure its something you could google. If you look next time you watch the news or read a gun magizine you will notice a fundimental shift in the way a departments SWAT,HRT etc teams are armed. It used to be you would see alot ok MP5 SMG in 9mm but do to over penatration most teams have switched to AR pattern rifles.

My Dad and I just picked one up. The first, and most important thing about this gun... is that it is one of the most fun guns you'll ever shoot! We've been feeding it cheap bulk ammo so I can't speak to it's accuracy. (I took the scope off my Rock River AR and mounted it up just to see what it would do, even with junk ammo, a pop can at 50yds doesn't stand a chance) I would guess we've put 1000-1500 rounds down it so far. It has jammed a couple times, but less often than your average ruger 10-22. I really don't have anything bad to say about it at all. It's great as an AR trainer(that's why we have it) The fit and finish is good. It functions very well. Get one and you'll love it. Just make sure you've got a ton of ammo, the little 100 round boxes don't last more than a few minutes! I'd also pick up an extra mag or two for it (and some one who will load em while you shoot!)

One thing that I wouldn't use it for is personal defence. Sorry, but the 22 is best left to plinking and gophers. It just doens't have any knock down power. An attacker might think twice if your packing what looks like an AR... but your not. For a personal defence weapon, buy a Taurus Judge revolver and get some shot shells for it. It'll change some ones mind about messing with you real quick, and the shot pellets will be less likely to make it into the neighbors living room.

Thanks for the review of the m&p..I really appreciate it!...As for the judge I wish I could have one, but it's California and apparently it qualifies as a short barreled shotgun and is since illegal to own. Anyway, thanks again for the great review!
