2010 Interior Grizzly

[Long Time Long Ranger]

Chased this grizzly for nearly four miles before I got a good shot at 200 yards and put him down. The color got him shot. Something about those blonde interior grizzlies with chocolate legs. They make pretty rugs. He may have only scored 15 and 100 pounds soaking wet but he is pretty and a grizz. I did wipe the milk from his lips before taking the picture. Actually he is much bigger and is a nice interior bear. They just look like babies next to the big bears that have a salmon stream nearby. Rifle was a 338 win mag with 185 grain Barnes TTSX at 3220 fps. Bullet entered last rib and exited the off side shoulder crushing the shoulder bones. The bear dropped at the shot and kicked a couple times before expiring. The bullet performed perfectly I assume. Very dead bear but the bullet is out on the tundra somewhere. I have many killer bullets saved but none are Barnes. They always blow right through never to be seen again.


The boar grizzly was aged at 5-6 years by game and fish. Estimated weight by me and the outfitter was about 350 pounds. Dragging/rolling him over and skinning him felt about like a 350 pound hog to me. but we had no scales. The outfitter kills a lot of interior bears though and is pretty good at it. They are not as big as many say.

Someday when I grow up I want to hunt a grizzly! Okay... at 54, I'm grown up, but I still want to hunt a grizzly someday. What a beautiful rug that bear will make! Please post a photo of the rug when it's done...

Thanks to all, the outfitter was Art Hirschel out of Delta Junction. He guides quite a few bear hunters every year and has good success. He runs a no-nonsense camp and will work hard for your bear. I was very pleased with him. He is a good guy and does what he says. Just understand he does not hunt 1000 pound coastal bears or even near the coast bears. These are true interior tundra grizzlies that get the prettiest color phases in Alaska. The price for his hunts are very fair for what he offers. Art and I jogged/ran/fast walked nearly four miles to catch up to this bear because we wanted the color phase. Art will work his butt off for your bear.

Dont knock the size, you may have not gotten a monster but you definitely got a quality Griz that myself and others drool over. Again congrats.

No matter the size, any grizzly is a great trophy. I've been fortunate enough to kill a couple. One was a small three year old and one was a few years older, but I was equally happy with both bears.

Unless I'm specifically hunting brownies on the coast, If I've got a tag in my pocket and I have an opportunity to take a legal interior grizz, it's going down.

Congratulations on a nice bear, that will make a nice rug. Interior grizzlies run much smaller than their costal cousins but there are some big interior bears out there.

I shot a sow that was collared and I found out from fish and game that she was 30 years old. She squared a litle over 7 1/2 feet and we guessed her weight to be around 650 pounds from past history, measurements and pictures. We've had a boar that makes one pass under our meat poles every year just to check to see if we've left some of the quarters hanging a little too low. His front print measures 8 1/2" which approximates to a 9 1/2 foot bear. We've managed to catch a glimpse of him a couple of times and he is a monster, very dark not that pretty blonde like you tagged.

Speedo I agree, A big interior bear pops up every now and then. Way more in the past. With hunting pressure in the interior over the past 40 years just hard to find one of those 20-30 year old bears. But they do happen on occasion. I saw a huge one year before last about 30 miles from where you live. Have hunted near you a few times through the years up and down the big and little Su drainage.

Beautiful bear and great story. I just picked up a 338 WM for future trips such as yours. I had a friend that worked at PMC back when the original Barnes X came out and PMC began factory loading them. He sent me some to try out of my new 300 Weatherby for PA Whitetails and I believe I penciled through them, as I shot one doe at probably 20 yards and she just ran off.

I'd like to pm you sometime about your 338 and about the Weatherbys.
