7mm REM MAG, H1000, 168 VLD, and Quickload

Hoping that one of my fellow longrangehunters with quickload could run the data including barrel time, for 7mm Rem Mag with 26" barrel, 168 grain Berger VLD, 3.433" OAL, with HODGDON H1000 powder.

I had a good load with Retumbo, but now I'm out of it, and I've got 8 lbs of H1000 so I thought I would try it.
It seems like this is a pretty popular combination, so I'm sure others would like to see this info as well.
Thanks.

My Shilen barreled 700 likes H1000 with that bullet a tad better than Retumbo. My bbl is 24" though. It's a #4 contour.

TXSendero:
168 Berger VLD. (no moly) OAL 3.433, 7mm RM. 26" barrel. Hodgdon H1000.
Using your input data and otherwise using Quickload database defaults:
Case fill - 102% (compressed load) 69.47 grain
peak pressure 54161 psi 87% SAAMI max
Muz V 2935 fps
Muz P 12051 psi

102% is arbitrary for a maximum compressed load. I like to keep case fills between 95% and 98% where possible. In my opinion H1000 is a bit burning for this combination of bullet, cartridge, and seating depth. It's certainly usable but it would not be my first choice.

My choice is IMR-7828 for shooting 168 Bergers from my 7mm Rem Mag 26" barrel Win 70 Laredo. It works well for me.

No one (including Quickload) can tell you what load will give best accuracy in your rifle but it can greatly reduce the testing of combinations which aren't likely to give good results.

Thanks LouBoyd and others for the info. I'm sure other powders will work for the 7Mag, but since I have 8 lbs of the H1000 I'm sure going to give it a try. I was just looking for a starting place to begin load development and the info given so far will help much.

In my 26" barreled 7mm rem mag I am using
72gr H1000
Federal case
Federal 215 primer
168 Berger 0.010" into the lands
3060 fps.

No pressure signs.
With this load I have taken red deer at 590, 545, 445 yds and a pig at 476 yds.

For what it's worth, I happened to look in the Lyman 48th Edition Reloading Manual, and it listed a max load of 73 grains in the 7mm RM with H1000 for a 168 SPBT. I doubt if I'll go that high, but I was going to try up to maybe 71.5 or 72 grains, depending on what the gun & brass & chrono shows me when I start the load development.

Stu did you find that loading the bullets to the lands has improved your accuracy over seating them right up to the Lands? I've been slowly working the 180's and 168's up to the lands, but never into them.

I have only tried the one seating depth.
Up until recently I have not had the tools to accurately measure seating depth, so I just keep seating the projectile slightly deeper until the lands just left a mark on the projectile.
I do intend to try the berger method of 0.01 into lands 0.04 off lands, 0.08 off lands and 0.12 off lands and see what happens.

Hey TX, I sent you a pm some time back. Anyhow, I'm using 72.0, Win. case, 215m, .010" off the lands in my Rem. 700. The stoney point gauge length is 2.723". The 71.5-72.5 were all good, so I took the middle one. I'm getting 3030fps and incredible accuracy. Good luck.
