Gentlemen,

I am all but sold on building a 6.5 Sherman.

Before I pull the trigger, pun intended :) , I want to get a little more data to make the decision.

At what velocity are those of you who own the 6-5 06, (Ai) is also under consideration or the 6.5X284 reaching your upper accuracy node.

In essence, I can get more velocity out of the Sherman but if I have to back off the throttle to get the accuracy, and that brings me in line with the other more main stream calibers, that may impact my decision.

So I am not interested in Max Velocity unless that is where your getting your accuracy sweet spot.

I am interested in shooting the 140 gr bullets.

My barrel will be a 8.5 twist.

Thanks in advance.

Aldon,

I can't help you with any comparisons other than to give my opinion that the more properly the rifle is built has more to do with accuracy at any velocity than the cartridge or caliber.

Rich sent me a 6.5 Sherman case. Its right there on the desk as a constant temptation.:D Ever hear of a 270 Sherman.:)

Thanks Roy.

Rich sent me one as well and I am waiting on the reamer....the waiting is painful.

This thread is my way of justifying the build to he nth degree.

I have communicated with him quite a bit and I am just making sure the extra effort in dies and fireforming etc is worth it.

Sweet design.

I have everything I need and if for some reason I decided on a more standard design, I could get her started.

I imagine the wait will be worth it though.

A 6.5 Sherman is a creation of elkaholic on LRH. It is an '06 type case improved and necked to 6.5 cal. It is his design thus he affixed the name to it.

I figured the sherman part was some onesname. LOL! so what is the difference between this and the 6.5x06??? If I am high jacking this thread I am sorry.

Yewl have to wait for Rich to weigh in on this with the specs for the Sherman design then compare with the 6.5-06.

The 6.5-06, I believe, is the 30-06 simply necked down to 6.5 cal.

If that's the case the below image will show the differences.

The 270 Win is on the right. The Sherman is on the left. (Pic taken w/a blackberry)

On the Sherman, Rich started with .270 case, pushed out the shoulder and straightened it out a bit.

Supposedly around 11% more capacity than standard 6.5-06 if my memory serve me well.

And the neck is a bit longer for better seating on the longer VLD's.

OK.

I spoke with Rich and came up with plan B, How to have my cake and eat it as well.

I dropped off everything at the smith today and in about a month I will pick up my Sendero rebarreled in 6.5-06.

I will get to test drive it and if I choose to, I can ream it out to the Sherman when the reamer is available in a few months. It gives me enough time to get the dies so it actually works out pretty well.

Now the count down starts! Anticipation is killing me:)

I would be curious to know the diference between the Sherman and a 6.5-06 AI. Case capacity is probably very close.
I know a 6.5-06 AI will shoot the 140 Berger's at 3200fps out of a 26.5" barrel.

True Blue,

Based on what Rich has indicated in previous posts, the AI case has ~ 6% more capacity than the standard -06, and his Sherman case is another 5% more spacious.

It sounds like you are pushing the AI a little faster than what I saw him post as he at one point also chambered the AI, but based on everything I have read, i would guess ~ 100fps gain over the AI.

My rifle will initially be set up as straight 6.5-06.

But it is only a matter of time until I build another in the Sherman chamber or ream this one out....If it is really accurate, I will not be able to bring myself to ream it out.

Good reason to build another:)
