Garmin Oregon

I'm thinking of getting one of the new Oregon series Garmins. I just cant decide which one. I can't see the big difference between the 500t, 500, and 400t. I'll be using it in Alaska so I want it to be good, but I don't have a fortune to spend on stuff I won't use. Any Input................

This doesn't really answer your question but I spent a lot of time researching which GPS to go with for mapping. Just google it and you'll come up with many forum messages and opinions. I ended up with the Garmin 60CSx. It seemed to have the most positive comments. I haven't used it yet though. Good luck.

I bought the Oregon 300 instead of the higher numbered models because I didn't want to pay for the bells and whistles in the more expensive Oregon models, knowing I would not use them. Good decision, very satisfied.

I don't remember since I immediately started using a Garmin Topo map I already have, you can find oout online.

Hi, I am using the Oregon 550 with public SD card from Montana maps and it has become the most important hunting tool I use.

I have owned a GPS for about 16 years. The first GPS was a Garmin 3Plus. It just gave up the gost and they say they cann't repair it. I have ordered a Garmin Oregon 450T because it comes with the topo maps installed. I also ordered a vehicle kit, marine holder and a bike/cart holder. I will down load the (g2) Atlantic coastal navagational charts, The inland lakes for the South East. I currently have the Map Tech topo maps for the state of NC, and AK. I also have the Garmin enhanced maps of Canada. It will be interesting to see how much better the new Oregon will be compared to the old 3Plus. The cost of the Oregon wholesale at Jerry's Sports south was about $60.00 more than I spent for the 3 Plus 16 years ago retail.

I have an Garmin Avation GPS for flying, combo GPS depth sounder for my boat and a NUVi for my truck.

GPS is way simpler to use and much more compact than the loran was.

So far the Oregon 450T with the extra Maps has been the ticket. I have been very pleased with some learning curve to get over.

I would recommend the units with the topographical maps (400t, 500t). The "T" stands for topo maps which cost you around 100 bucks to buy anyway. I believe the only major difference between the 400 and 500 series is the 500's have a built in camera.

I love my 400t. Carry it every place I go. Get some land ownership maps and you will not regret it.
