I connected with this nice female at a confirmed 505 yards in February of this year. I was alerted to the presence of several coyotes just next to the house, by the time I got geared up (-20 Celcius, mid-winter up here in Manitoba means at least 2 layers of clothing) and outside, the 3 coyotes had trotted off to a bale in the neighbours field to take in some sun. I got set up on a fence post, as I had forgot my bi-pod in my rush to get out and put some fur on the ground, so it was going to have to do!
After I settled into my shooting position, I spied the 3 coyotes, 2 of which were on the ground beside the bale, the third rested atop the bale. I gave them a minute or two to get used to my presence as they saw me settle into my position. After a minute or two the most weary decided he'd seen enough and slowly trotted over the hill, no problem, there were still 2 coyotes to tartet, so I took out my hand call and proceeded to wail away, with no response, not to howls, not to rabbit distress.....nothing, all they did was to bark a warning bark repetedly, making me more and more nervous of their retreat.
This was when I decided that enoughs enough and that I was going to have to take the shot. I next guestimated the distance to be roughly 475 yards, (didn't have a range finder at the time) and lined up the shot. As I was steadying myself, I suddenly came down with the worst case of "buck fever" I have ever had, I don't know why, but just thinking of putting the hammer down from that distance got me all excited. I actually had to look away and mentally talk my breathing and heart beat back down to normal. Once all the shakes and butterflies subsided, I established my sight picture once again, and chose the correct plex line for the estimated distance on my Burris FFII 4.5-14x42 mm scope with bal plex reticle and slowly squeezed one off!
It was instant, my 22-250 bellowed it's ear splitting blast and sent a 50 gr berger match bullet screaming upwards of almost 4000 fps, connecting with the coyote and dispatching her before she knew she was being shot at. At the shot, the second coyote took off over the hill, and came back at about 625 yards after a few ki-yi's, again I took aim and sqeezed the trigger, only to miss because of not factoring in the wind. If I'd have slowed down an extra 10 seconds and factored for wind drift, it would have been a double long distance record, but I'm happy with the 505 yard single just the same!
