250AB or 300MK for hunting with 338 edge?

Well guys finally pulled the trigger with all my preferance points and drew an any bull elk tag for a very tough draw in E. Oregon. Now the work begines. First on my list is which bullet the 250AB or the 300MK from a .338 edge? The 300s shot just the way their are supposed to with .3 groups but I'm concerened about meat loss. Is the AB any better?

I tried a quick search with no results, I'll continue to search the sight and thanks in addvance to all replies.

I haven't used the 250's yet, but have shot 2 Antelope, 2 Mulies, 2 Elk and a Black Bear with the 300 gr SMK and have had nothin but excellent results.
If you put one in a front shoulder , you'll loose some meat as you would with most any bullet.
Keep them in the rib/vitals and you'll be good to go.

No one likes the SMKs better than I do but they are not a hunting bullet even if they are used
for that purpose. They are a target bullets that's why they are called MATCH KINGS.

They will definitely kill game .!!!

The accubond is a HUNTING BULLET and has predictable results on game . Plus they are very
accurate at all ranges .Every caliber that I have tried the accubonds in performed extremely
well at all distances hunted.

There is a reason that they are the #1 hunting bullet on this site .For the guys that can and
do shoot 1500yards + then accuracy is everything and the object is to make a good hit and
not to worry about meat loss .

I tried the SMKs and found that shot in the same place every time sometimes the SMKs almost
cut them in half and the next time left a one caliber exit hole.

The accubonds produce 1 to 3inch exit holes every time .

I use the 225 and the 250 accubonds in my 338 RUM and my maximum range for ELK is 1100
yards for reasons of energy,velocity and my ability under hunting conditions.

I used to use a lot of different bullets until the accubonds came along and now I use nothing
but the Accubond for hunting as long as the rifle will shoot to my standards.

I know others will disagree but that's what makes the world go around.

Have you tried the Hornady, 250 grain Match pill? I have tried them and they seem a bit softer than the 300 grain SMK.

They might work better for chest shots but would damage some meat on a shoulder shot.

I have not shot the Nosler AB's in .338 but they do work well in my other calibre rifles.

Starkey unit 252A1. Been buying points for probably 7 years or more and my Dad atleast 10. As a party we both got tags. He finaly retired and this is the first time we have actually put in for a tag and not just bought a preferance point. I usually just go bow hunting so no big loss but now I'll have to figure out the riffle season of elk hunting. Also got deer tags for the same unit so we will deffinatly be scouting for elk. Probably spend the whole month of October in the hills. Can't wait.

There is probably better units with tougher draws but this tag seemed to be one of the more popular ones with 3,300 applicants for 398 tags last year.

I'll have to buy box of the 250 ABs and see how they shoot. Anyone have some load data with H1000 in the .338 edge? Although, the 300 MK has certainly had alot of success in the field. I havn't worked the drops for either yet so I'll have to choose one and stick with it.

Havn't tried the Hornady. May be a good bullet but I think I will probably chose between the MK vs. AB

Attemting to post a pic here. A nice Muley I got in 07. Doesn't really qualify for long range but it was a dandy. Some of the best hunting advise I have ever herd for shooting large game is to "don't shoot the little ones". Been working out pretty good for me so far.

Didn't shoot him with my Edge but an old 1894 M94 6.5X55 Swedish Mouser with a Hornady 140 SST @2600 FPS.

We'll see what this year brings.

I agree 100% and I too speak from experience. Last fall, 4 antelope out to 820 yards , 6x6 bull @ 526 yards, 4x5 Muley at 400 plus yards, two White Tail does one at 350 and the other @ 1137 yards... All very dead with no tracking required. The 300 SMK works for me as a hunting bullet.

Well the more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards the 300 MK. Still have a few months before the season so I may change my mind again.

The pics in my photo bucket account are of .429 bullets I make from 40 S&W cases. The 30-06 case was cut down to form a 44 AMP case. Basicly a rimless 44 Rem Mag. Another story all together.

I cant say anything about the 250g AB but I did wack a spike bull at 915 yards last year with the 300g smk and he was DRT. Exit hole was about 2" and internal damage was great.

I was actually thinking of switching to either a 225 or 250g AB because there easier to find around my neck of the woods, but they just dont offer the ballistic performance that this round gets with the 300g smk. You build this rifle around the 300g smk, so why not use it right??

Congrats on the tag. You will find Starkey is not all that great of a unit and theres a lot of people. Its not a unit I would even think of hunting trophy elk. Hopefully I am wrong and you get a nice bull though. A lot of the good bulls are on private property as well.

I happened to draw a Mt. Emily any bull tag after 11 years of applying. This IMO is considered a trophy unit when they only give out something like 45-50 tags with 2000 people applying. Its tough country and not a lot of people put the time and effort into it. Which dont bother me any. We hunt mt. emily every year for spikes so we know the country and elk very well. Hel we killed 11 bulls last year and 10 the year before that, so we obviously know what were doing. You look around the other camps and your lucky to see 1 elk hanging. There is some really good bulls in mt. emily. We see a couple during every season that easily go 350-370" which is what I"m holding out for. I didn't wait 11 years to shoot a raghorn or a 300" bull.

I would stay with the 300g smk. There already shooting well for you so the next thing to do is get some bullets loaded up and get out shooting!
