.338 Allen Magnum...WOW!

I had the distict priviledge of not only seeing a .338 AM this weekend, but actually got to shoot it! WOW! was this one impressive beast! A J Peacock stopped on his way back from his easter visit to his family and brought the AM along. It was a beautiful day with no wind so naturally we had to burn some powder. we both shot sighters on the steel @ 650 yds and the gun was right on the money after him not having shot it since last elk season. we then moved out to milk jugs @ 800 yds.....not a problem....2 dead jugs.....he then wanted to check his windage just to be sure and shot my hanging plate over on the edge. this is a peice of 3/4" cast steel that is called a mucking plate in a mine.....the AM shot right thru it at 800 yds! my 6X284 barely even scratches it!

this is the first Kirby Allen build i have had the pleasure to see/shoot, and i want you to know that it is a work of precision shooting art..... thanks for the fun AJ.......aj

Glad you had fun with the big girl, they are a thrill to shoot. You just can not discribe the experience properly unless you pull the trigger as you know now very well.

The 338 Allen Magnum is much larger then the 338 Edge. It is based off the huge 408 Chey Tac parent case. Typical performance levels are in the 3300 to 3400 fps range with 300 grain SMK or 3500 fps class with some of the 265 to 275 gr custom aluminum tipped bullets.

Its in a totally different class of performance then the Edge but that does not mean its best for your needs. Just depends on what you are planning on doing with your rifle. The main difference between the two is performance numbers and barrel life. That said, if you take good care of a 338 AM barrel, it will last you many, many seasons of hunting big game at very long range.

Left to right, 338 Edge, 338 Lapua, 338 Allen Xpress and 338 Allen Magnum with 265 gr AT RBBT.

The 338 allen magnum is an improved 408 cheytac wildcat.

im curious as to barrel legnth and powder used in obtaining those velocities?

32" barrels will get you to 3300 fps pretty easily with H-50BMG, generally 142 to 145 grains depending on lot of powder.

34-36" will get you 3400 fps with good brass life with same loads.

I used Vintech's on a bear hunt and it is an amazing round. I have the 338AX but I used the 338AM since it was there. Black bear at 560 yards-he was dead instantly.

I had an 338 edge built and with a 250 grain smk im getting 3009fps 99 grains of rl25. wish i would had the 338AM more speed and better accuracy atleast i think. If you could send me some ballistics on your gun. thanx Whapahogun)
