.338 EDGE Brass?

I have a simple question for you guys that own the .338 EDGE when sizing up brass for it do you use .300RUM brass necked up to the .338 or do you use .375 Ultra necked down to .338. Also a few more questions. Does anyone know why in the world did Remington made the .338 utral a whoppen .10 shorter than all three other ultras. It just doesn't make much since to me why remingon would do this? So if anyone has any insight on this tidbit of info please enlighten me. And last question is how much difference does that .10 case lenght make in performance between the .338 Ultra and .338 edge? Thanks in advace Jason

If it were me, I would be necking up 300RUM cases and trimming to suit, the reason is this, even though unlikely, necking 375 -338 MAY cause the brass in the neck to thicken. You'll be pushing the shoulder back with either case, so just choose one or the other.

To answer your other question. Remington HAD to make the 338RUM shorter because the ogive of most 338 bullets would be inside the case neck when seated to the proper length for functioning if it were left at 2.850", so instead of making the neck shorter they shortened the entire case, exactly the same as Winchester did with the 300 and 338.

The difference in length will make no discernible difference in performance.

I use 375 rum brass necked down and the necks do not thicken. I have always favored necking brass down, to necking up whenever possible.

Just a quick one. I was always of the belief that the extra size in the case did deliver some performance benifits ? Anyone want to jump in and clear that one up ? I also neck up !

So my question is which is better, the Edge or the Rum? I have read other posts that seem to inply that the edge is better with heavy bullets (300 grainers VLD) but for standard 250 grain and below then they are the same. Is this true? I will be getting a .338 Ultra BDL left hand new in box as well as a .300 RUM left hand bdl nib in trade for a newer bow later next month, from a friend/dealer down in Arizona. It will come to about $400 worth for each gun. I know that the BDL's are discontuinued, and I have seen them sell online for around $550. So I hope that is a good deal, I already own a .300 RUM lh (700 LSS) and wouldn't give it up, but I do hope to have a custom job done on it someday. But as far as the .338 rum goes what disavantage does it have compared to the edge? In a actual hunting scenerio what advantage does the edge give you that the rum can't?

I would guess that a 338 RUM with a 30" bbl would be about equal to a 338 Edge with a 27-28" bb.

the difference between necking up 300 or taking 375 down is only about .001 wall thickness. i always thought it would be more but this was verified a while back when this question came up.

Dave, I always figured the difference with long barrelled rifles, shooting the 300SMK, there would be around 125fps difference for the same pressures.

Is that about right? If not, how much is a BFD in your opinion?

tough question, i would guess as it relates to these 2 calibers, about 100 fps. my point was, a 100 fps doesn't really make much difference when trying to kill at long range. if the edge would be good to say 1500, the rum would only be 100 yards behind it at the most.

Thats about right. But on the other side of the coin, if you were buying a custom barrel and having it chambered, why would you pick the RUM over the Edge? Unless you didn't reload or were heading to Africa (where you need the barrel and brass to be marked the same)?

The 338 RUM is only 1 BFD unit behind the EDGE. But with FAR less powder, the 338 Win Mag is only 2 BFD units behind the RUM , maybe we are just bitten by the 'more power' bug?? Of course, my 'get serious' 338 is an AM!

So the real question would be, how significant would 1 unit BFD be if you were in the middle of BFE?
