Threading .284 caliber with 1/2×28???

I've always heard the typical rule of thumb is that only 22 caliber and below should have the muzzle threaded 1/2×28. I've also recently started seeing that rule of thumb stretched to .264 and below for 1/2×28. Read where 1/2×28 isn't recommended for 30 caliber because the wall becomes too thin. Several smith's I talked to said they prefer at least .010 in the wall. I understand all of that.

My question comes to .284 caliber. Specifically 7mm-08 at the 21" length at the muzzle. It would still give me .012 in the wall. I know Fierce and some other manufacturers sell rifles in 7mm Mag and are threaded 1/2×28 with a muzzle brake, but mine would be for a lower pressure cartridge, with a suppressor.

Any experience with or reasons why it's not safe to do so??

Thanks

Have a Kimber factory threaded for a 308 Win. 7/16"-28....really not what I would put on it for threads....
I have a lathe and install my own threads for suppressors....did a Winchester 70 243 Win. and put 5/8"-24 then added a larger shoulder as a stop like bell shaped so the larger threads could be used....

It is OK to use smaller than the norm for suppressors you just need to be more careful or have a bell added to give a larger shoulder....

Look at a Ruger American 450 Bushmaster with a 16" barrel they put the best idea on a barrel to put a suppresser on a bell end....all manufactures should use this idea with a brake they look OK....

Thanks Yote Wacker. I have enough shoulder per the suppressor manufacturer specs. I'm currently threaded at 9/16 for a brake and would like to have that cut off and rethreaded to 1/2 so I can use my direct mount suppressor. Just wasn't sure from a safety/pressure aspect.

Just get a 9/16 direct mount.

akmtnhnt.... my options are a direct thread 1/2×28 5" suppressor, or a brake attached heavier 9" suppressor which is the current set up. I'm trying to slim down and lighten up what hangs off the front of the barrel.

My factory Rem 700 STW was threaded 1/2x28. It's still going.

Personally I'd prefer to have a barrel with enough meat on it to go larger but it doesn't seem to be a problem.

It depends on your muzzle OD.

I have a .257 WBY with .740" at the muzzle with 5/8-24" thread (MBM self-timing beast brake) ...

Howdy, 2 of my Weatherby have 1/2 × 28 240 and 257. 2 of my Christian arms Mesa in 7.08 and 6/5 creedmore have that threading also. Works just fine. Hope this helps. 😎
