Anyone shooting the .375 350 gr SMK?

I have been lurking for quite a while and discovered in older threads that the 350 gr SMK is available through Cheytec. I was disappointed to find my 375 H and H's twist is too slow.

I have heard that the 375/408 cheytac uses a 1 in 11.5 but the "normal" sized cartridges will most likely need a 1 in 10 twist. This leads me to the details I would like to know.

If you have been shooting this bullet in any smaller cases I'd love to hear the details.

The 350 SMK was designed by chey tac specifically for the 1-11.5 twist. They commissioned Sierra to build these bullets. If you seach the threads here and on snipershide forum, you will see folks shooting the 350 smk with a much tighter twist than the 1--11.5. The 350 seems to be really forgiving. Kiby Allan used to build his 375 AM with 1--11.5, but on one of his threads he said he now building it in a 1-10 twist so it will also shoot some of the longer bullets.

Spend some time looking at some of the new longer solids weighing 370 to 420 graines with BC's that are said to be well over 1.2 and you might just get the bug for a real tight twist like a 1-8 or even tighter. When you run the numbers on these bullets it's simply staggering. GS makes these real long solids and ZA makes them as well and there are others like Rky mtn, Hooker, Lehigh, and the Preditor bullets. Hope I didn't confuse you, there are several new bullets comming out for the 375 and in time I think you will find that this caliber is the ultimate 1 mile gun. However, I'd never trade it for my edge.

I have been trying some long range loads with that bullet in my 378 wby. I am very impressed with it. With some of the new high bc 375 bullets the 378 wby has become one of the best long range elk rifles. My 338-378 wby's are the only thing that can stay with it for delivering max power at long range. Unless you go up to the chey-tac case.

That bullet is very forgiving with regards to twist rates. It will do fine out of a 10 twist. I fired them out of an 8 twist and they did ok; however, I believe they were on the verge of coming apart.

For 350 smks call Jamison. I have one 375/408 with 12 twist with a shorter barrel and the other with a 34.5 " barrel and 10 twist. Both are great and shoot the smks very accurately. Looking forward to seeing how the longer bullets perform.

355 gr solids for the 375 cheytac...a 1-10 twist will do fine with these...These GS bullets get even bigger....all the way out to 420 gr

With you knowledge of the big WBY 378s and now the 350 smks I would appreciate some advice for a friend. He has a 300 wby he s used for elk and now is planning to take large plains game in Africa and moose and caribou in Alaska. I thought that the WBY H+H would be reasonable but he also will be taking probably 400 - 500 yds shots and so it would seem the 378 with 260 Accubonds (from Midway) wound be a good choice - that s about 3100 fps. Probably with a accubrake would be good. Did you end up adding a brake and if so what type? I presume the 350 smks did fine in your 378? I ve seen people getting 1" 100 yds grouping with the ABs in the 378 - he wont be loading. I figured if its not that accurate, he could upgrade it - my 30-378 would never shoot accurately so Dan Lilja recommended a 30" barrel for it and Dave Viers added a Manners stock he custom cut, added a custom trigger, bedded it and now it regurlarly groups 6-9" regularly at 600 yds. It s a great carry gun although my 375 /408 CTs certainly are great for reaching out to beyond 1000 yds. Appreciate your comments about the 378. I also take to heart your comment about the ammo might be more difficult to get hold of if ones checked luggage is checked - clearly 375 H+H is easier to get hold of in Africa.

I have been shooting the 350 gr SMK's in my 375 H&H. W/ max load of H4350/IMR 4350. Getting 2450 fps from a Brux barrel 1-10 twist. Target shooting out to 1K yards, I'm getting around 9/16" MOA. I also tried the factory 1-12 twist barrel and it wouldn't stabilize the bullet. In case you were looking to get a new barrel, I just ordered a second from Brux and the wait was only 8 weeks. Everyone else was 8-12 months.
