As you all can see from some of my earlier post I am very new to this and I am trying to learn everything I can about making a gun more accurate.

First question... Do you pillar bed AND glass bed the action of the rifle, or just one or the other. I have a ruger 10/22 and a rem 700 I want to try this on.

Second question... What is the best glass to use to bed one. I was looking at Brownell's acrugel bedding kit.

Third question... Do you need to pillar bedd a synthetic stock or just wood stocks.

Thank you guys in advance..

Almost forgot...what about the recoil lug. Should I get a different one from the factory one..IF so which one?

I have bedded pillar bedded stocks, both wood and syn. They still need support on the recoil lug and first 2 or so inches of barrel. I like marine tex. Its easy to work with. As far as recoil lugs go, the stock Rem one works fine. I wouldnt use a bigger one unless your changing the barrel and rebedding.

Summitsitter,
Pillar bedding means it is glass bedded, but, also where the action screws run through the stock there is a steel or alluminum pillar that the action rests upon for a non compressable surface to torque the action screws down onto.
I've tried several different bedding materials over the years and I probably use Marine Tex more than any other. Devcon steel or alluminum putty works just as well but is more expensive. I can get the Marine Tex in a small kit for about $12 and it is the perfect amount to bed a Remington style action with.
I wouldn't waste your time trying to pillar bed or even full action bed a synthetic stock. The tupperware stocks aren't worth the cost to even practice with. There is too much oil in the plastic of those stocks and it's a real bitch trying to make the bedding stick. I prefer to pillar bed all of my rifles rather than just full action bed them, but some kind of bedding is better than none. Good luck.

I would think a long time before bedding a 10-22. This is asking for trouble if you do not have any experience at it.

They're not that hard to do, a person could get into trouble but they could do that with any rifle. First rifle I ever bedded was a 10/22 and looking back I don't think it was any more difficult than other rifles I've done. There is a good how-to article over at Rimfire Central.

My mistake, I was in a hurry to get out of the house and on the road this morning and got mixed up on which rifle gave me so much grief. It was a Savage that I got the action screw glued into the action and stripped the head and had to grind the head off and pull it out the top. That was not so much fun.

Sorry about the teh mix up.

What I'm gonna try

Okay here's what I think I'm gonna do ACRUGLAS gel the rem. 700 to the SPS stock just for practice first. I hate this stcok anyways so if I screw it up no big deal. For my replacement stock if it is synthetic does it need to have the aluminun bedding block in it?

The link below is a VERY good read if you have never bedded a stock before. It made my first couple of stocks look like I knew what I was doing.
All kidding aside I had to read it a couple of times before it all came to me, but I have never had to "Redoo" one.
