Mauser Question

I have a LR Mauser 98 (military) in 7x57. I'm going with this action for my first custom rifle. (Have a pair of Savages, but those don't count). Is 7mm Mag a little big for a 100yr old action? should i go with a .308 instead?

If it were me, I'd make it a custom 7x57, but that's just me. The action, if properly treated by the smith, will take the 7mmRM. If it's a 7x57 now, then you got a long action, and making it a short action cartridge like a .308 will sort of be a waste in my opinion. How about a 30-06? I have one of those built on a mauser action. Very nice. Anyway, you can go most any way you want. The mag size may limit you somewhat.

think this one is scrapped, the pitting appears a little too deep for me to be comfortable putting money into it, let alone shooting a few hundred or thousand rounds through it.

Too bad it's already been sporterized...now it's pretty much worthless

Take it to your smith and get his oppenion, I would guess that the action is good, but I haven`t seen it. As for your question about what round to go with, you can go with any round with a .473 head and not have to do bolt work. I just got a .35 Whelen barrel for a Mauser action about 5 mins. ago from UPS that`s going on a CZ-24 action. Mid -Way has some short chambered barrel on sale at very cheap prices now. I can`t swear their top shelf barrels, but for the price I`m going to try one.
