I own a 16x42 MP-8 IOR scope, and I can say I did a right decision.
This scope is used for hunting at medium and long distances. I'm shooting at this power 16x for more then 3 years now, but for me is working great.

So I did some tests 2 days ago.
Me and my hunting buddy got out for some serious shooting.
His scope is a Leupod 6.5-24x50 with 30mm tube, mine IOr 16x42 with 30 mm tube.
We start shooting from 100 - 1200 yards, and surprising for me it was the leupi scope stops to see bullet hits (dust blowing) from bullet impact at 1100 -1200 yards.
With My IOR I could see it clearly..
First I told my buddy, he is blind or maiby he is tired, How could you do not see the hit?
But after we switch the rifles, I notices the problem it was his leupi scope.
The clarity of the lens, and the field of depth at that distance it was far behind IOR.

Just a fact what happened 2 days ago.

300RUM,

I was shooting a straight 16X but had problems finding the target when switching form spotting scope to the rifle. Biggest problem was field of view. Finding the animal took just a bit too long.

How do you get along with MIL stadia and MOA clicks? Or am I not familiar enough with that particular scope?

Hi royinidaho,
I'm not using the spotting scope on the field. Just for target shooting.
I havit the same problem at the biginner but now i'm used with.

I love the MIL stadia, VERY EASELY TO RANGE ANIMALS, AND FOR HOLDOVER. It is far away better then MILDOTS sistem. I LOVEIT I LOVIT.

I love the MIL stadia I used it past 800-900 yards for hold over shoots, and about the MOA clicks... I used a $3.00 paper sticker on elevation knobs, where I marked with a markerpen all the elevation MOA click from 400 - 1800 yards on 50 yards increment.

The IOR is on top of 20MOA picatiny rail, on 338Edge rifle with 300SMK at 2700fps.
I zeroed the rifle at 400yards (the elevation clicks on scope is maximum at the bottom) so it is easely for me to return all the time at zero without problem.

So bottom line, I used hold over for 50-800yards, and past 800yards up I used clicks.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm in the midst of the quandary scope selection. I 'must' purchase another scope soon. I settle on one scope today and two others tomorrow then jump back to the original scope.

I use a 4.5 - 14 Weaver Tactical that optically is as good as any scope I've compared it with while in actual hunting conditions. I'd snap up another but the quit making them long enough ago that even used ones are hard to find.

I've put the cross hairs @ 14X on deer and elk at over 1200 yards and the sight picture is plenty good for making the shot. Also, on Shawn's video I noticed that he was shooting a 15X a bunch of the time.

So if I were going to spend the money this morning the scope would be an IOR 4-5-14x42 (same as the weaver) NP-8 reticle in the first focal plane. With the reticle in the FFP it is calibrated/accurate an any powder setting. That is also the same as the weaver. The first focal plane thing is pretty sweet. Just like your fixed power, the stadia is always what it says it is.

The only downer with the weaver is the !/8" MOA click. However, it is nice when you really want to tweak things in at longer distances.;)

Dear Roy,

Whay you do not purchase IOR 4.5-18x42 on FFP. This scopes are ok, and you will have plently zoom at 18x to see detailes at looooooong distances.
If you have binoculars lets say at 8 or 10x and you spot one animal at 1000 yards, you will need a spotting scope to make sure you can see the antlers, and count them right.
But if you get a scope with at least 16x or 18x you will NOT NEED THE SPOTTING SCOPE.
USE YOUR RIFLE SCOPE, AND YOU WILL HAVE LESS GEAR TO HOWL ALL DAY ON THE FIELD.

This is what I do myself.

SWFA didn't list the 4.5-18 in the FFP or at least I couldn't see it. If the 4.5-14 IOR is anywhere the optics of the Weaver it will do for as long as I think I can shoot. However the 3-18X would be better.

I have binos and a good spotting scope. My rifle @ 12 lbs is way to heavy to use as a spotter. In most areas the field of view is a full 360 Degrees. Where I'm only looking at a specific smaller area that can be covered from a single position I use the binos and rifle only as its all open sage brush plus I don't care much about horns.

If a smaller set of horns would give me a better shot than a larger set out to the limitations of my abilities I'd take the smaller set.

Hi Roy,

I put through my IOR 300rounds on 338Edge with 300SMK and muzzle brake, and 18lb rifle, and it holds PERFECT. I do not have problems with my IOR.
About the 3-18x42 FFP just talk with 308Nate, he can get one for you.
I got mine through Nate.

recently aquired this 3-18 FFP

IORs have been working great for me for years. The 6-24s and the 3-18 stay on 18x all the time so the MP-8 reticle is MOA instead of ½mills. The two old 16Xs have sean a lot of different guns from the BMGs to HMRs..

NDNorm, MachV,

I'm likin' what I'm seein' and hearin'.

I guess I'll go with the 3-18 with the largest objective I can get in that model.

The 3X is great for strolling to the hide. 18 is plenty for whatever plus its gets very fast to set up the shot when the stadia are in MOA. It seems like any time savings is worth it.

I wouldn't be so concerned about the objective but in the mountains by the time the sun sets the shade on the east side of the mountain is pretty dark.

Thanks to ak338RUM for starting this thread.
