6.5 Sherman VS 280 Ackley Improved

Sectional density kinda goes out the window with the frangible Berger. If you put a bonded 168 ABLR or 180 eld-m vs the 156 Berger I'm pretty certain the 7mm Nosler or Hornady is going to penetrate deeper. Take a Hammer 6.5 and I'm sure that SD is very relevant.

My old Sherman was pushing the 150gr Matrix at 3180fps in my 24" Bartlein, but it may have just been a faster barrel. Either way, this was before the magical RL26 came about and I had a case jam-packed full of RL33 to the point I was "embracing the crush" to hit those speeds. =)
6 years later, I wish I had just kept that rifle lol
A a 156 will run just as fast as a 150 Matrix, because of the shorter bearing surface, and hit harder!

Or just put a 150-160 cup and core with a thicker jacket in the 6.5 and your back to where you were.
The one advantage with the 7 is if you want to run a heavy.

Exactly. I like the 157 grain Hammers out of my 280 AI. I get around 3060 fps but the BC is only .538. Monometals are real good elk medicine out to about 600 yds. I'm very comfortable with that limitation.

I will have to switch to RL26 or H1000 in my 6.5 Sherman pretty soon as I am running out of Retumbo. I already run RL26 in my 7 Sherman MAX with 195 Gr Berger's. I have a lot of H1000 and RL26 though.

But both the 280 AI and the 6.5 Sherman will get it done for you. Just a preference thing.

I work for a Gas Distribution company. For some reason we don't have to follow hours worked Because of we have to keep the public safe. My longest shift was, I went to work on a Thursday morning at 7:00 AM and got off work at 11:30 AM Saturday morning. So 52.5 hours straight.
As in worked, alert standing and walking? If so that's definitely military service stuff
I'm legally limited to 17 hours then off 7. Lol but I did 23 days in a row at 17 a day..

Many states allow juvenile hunting with adult, still separate " bag limit"
That's actually nice to know. I forgot about that. I all ways get a hunting book where I hunt and brush up for that state. Every state is different. I remember when I went To Colorado 1 year with some friends on a elk hunt. I shot me a couple coyotes and 1 bobcat. It was about 2 or 3 hours after sundown. Man those people I USED to hunt with were upset with me for shooting those varmints. 1 of the guys was a friend of mines dad. I asked him if he ever read the hunting manual? I all ways high light some stuff in there for a quick reference for what I'm doing. Specially out of state. It says you can hunt all the varmints you want until you fill your elk tag. The next day he shot a elk about a hour before sunrise. He field his tag out and everything with the time on it. I started laughing so hard. I told him please tell me you did not wright that time down on there at a hour before sun rise. He told me yes he did. Yep that was a hefty fine. He was so proud of his elk. I sat down with everybody and went over a few things with them in the hunting guide. You can not shot game animals ( that need a tag ) 30 min before sunrise and 30 min after sunset. He has hunted in Colorado for almost 30 years and did not know that. I was a little shocked. I've been back a few times by myself. Just not as fun. Hunting should be about family and friends. Follow the rules when ya hunt. If you don't know something I would all ways ask a game warded. Ask if they will go over the rules with you. I've had some point stuff out in the hunting guid for me. They have all bin supper nice To me. All ways willing to help me.

Just wanted to share for whoever wants to enjoy. I was in Brawley California with some of my family and my girl friend. It's not edited, sorry about that. Go ahead laugh away. But it's still cool I thank.

Was your 150 Accubonds factory Nosler or did you load them? If you loaded them, what brass did you use? Thanks

copper creek custom ammo actually - I've always been thrilled with there ammo in my guns. Have not personally had a bad experience, I have 6.5prc, 6.5-284's and now the 280ai. I do not load so I pay a little extra to get the mix I want. I have also had great luck with hendershots, for those who don't load.

I've never owned an Ackley, but used to have the Sherman. It's still the one that got away, but I wanted something that seemed shinier at the time and couldn't afford to have both.
With the heavy for caliber, high BC 6.5mm options available these days, is there anything the 280AI is capable of that the 6.5 Sherman is not?
I'm looking to assemble a new mountain gun (my Mark V is HEAVY), and I feel a burning need for one of these two rounds.
In what scenarios would one be better than the other?
Just my 2 cents worth here. I am thinking since you said a mountain gun that elk might be on the menu. I own several 6.5's and love them. 6.5x284, 6.5 PRC, and 264 mag. My father had a 280 imp and it was a great gun. Great shooter. 98 Mauser with a Douglas barrel. My opinion is if elk are on the menu go with the caliber that you can shoot the heaviest bullet. They are tough critters. Not saying the 6.5"s aren't capable. They very much are so. Like I said, I love the 6.5 but when I go Elk hunting I carry a 330 Dakota. Oh and by the way, I do not own a 6.5 creed. LOL!!!
