OK guys..........been playing a;ittle my custom 280AI and 140's. The gun has a 23" barrel. I'm getting 3100fps right now with it. Is that about max with the 140's or do you think there is another 100fps or so left in her somewhere? I guess what I'm asking is, what is a bout the max I can expect out of the 23" barrel? Just curious I guess?

I think your pretty much maxed out!

Thats what I was thinking but have not really played with htis gun since I had it built a few years ago? I've been a die hard handgun hunter for the past 7 years and am starting to get the the long range rifle hunting bug! I figure the 280AI I already had would do just fine out to around 600 yards or so. Not really LONG range but long for me. It shoots the 140 Nosler CT's at 3106fps and keeps them around .6" @ 100 yards for 3 shots. Guess I will leave well enough alone.......................

You might try 150gr Smkhp's. May not lose any appreciable velocity, believe it or not, and will pick up some ballistic coefficient. You're right, 23" isn't optimum. I crowned my .280 Rem at 25 " and it doesn't have the capacity of the AI.

Good luck, Tom

Tom,
I was trying to biuld a light weight stalking rifle and was'nt really thinking of the optimum length for the AI. I wish I would have atleast went 24". Anyway.......what kind of speed are you getting with 150's and 25" tube? Thanks..............

I clocked 140 gr AB's from my 24" Hart barreled 280AI at 3225 fps with my Oehler 35.

I just finished the rifle a couple months ago and haven't ran it through a chronograph yet. They aren't hot, though, I'm expecting 2950 or so. I really like this caliber and this rifle. Awhile back, a friend wanted to know what I thought about the cartridge. Simple question, if you neck down a 30-06 and bump the shoulder out a little, how bad could it be?

JD338, very good numbers, thanks. You guys may talk me into opening the chamber to the AI. My barrel is a #5 contour Shilen SS. Ought to work great.

JDJHNTR, sounds like a fine rig for what you built it for.

Good hunting, Tom
