I've wanted to start a dedicated thread for anybody with experience shooting the 338 270gr ELD-X. It does not seem that many people shoot this bullet. Maybe we can dig up some field results.
What cartridge, powder, seating depth, muzzle velocity, etc, are your shooting? How accurately are these bullets shooting and how they are performing on game. How does it compare to other bullets in your gun?
I have been shooting this bullet for about a year now in my 338 RUM. 27" #4 countour 1:10 Hart barrel on a Borden action.
Muzzle velocity with 95gr RL-33 and .010" jump to the lands proven out to be 2855 FPS. One hole accuracy at 100 yards and 1/4 moa accuracy out to 1000. The same accuracy as I'm getting with the Berger 300 EH, but with less temp sensitivity, which I think is from shooting at a bit less pressure.
Finally had a chance to shoot a big bodied bull with this load at 1127 yards. Impact velocity was 1938 fps with 2251 ft.lbs of retained energy (according to the Applied Ballistics app).
I shot the bull 4 times and all 4 shots impact 3-4 inches low with perfect windage. First shot was a complete pass through behind the shoulder through the lungs. 2nd shot was right next to the first and I retrieved that bullet right in the hide on the far side. Bull took a couple steps and quartered hard towards me, the 3rd and 4th shots were maybe 2 inches apart at the shoulder/neck junction and traveled under the heart and into the gut cavity. Neither exited and I did not try and find them. Below is a pic showing impressive bullet performance for a 1938 FPS impact.
I'm curious if anybody has any results with close range/high impact velocity? I would expect high fragmentation similar to the Berger 300 EH.
