lots of bears have been killed with side arms, you might not have time to draw, you might have time to draw.
I keep a 10mm on my side, lots of opinions on that, but I feel better with it. Heck, I'm the kind of guy that keeps a fire extinguisher on my boat, probably won't ever need it, but if you do, you'll wish you had it. To each their own.

Better to have it and not need it my friend!

I hunt in Nevada so no bears. But if I needed a sidearm it would have to be my TAURUS Tracker .44 mag.

My 'yote rifle is a 6.5 PRC Browning X-Bolt Pro. IT can reach out and with 130 gr. bullets shoots very flat.

6x45 mm works well, 44mag 300 gr custom made ammo in a chest rig, rem 870 00/slug combos these wok for me

Heck yeah, I really need to get that chest rigg, lately I have been using a lighter side arm , like my Walthers PPQ M2, because its lighter... I have gravitated towards using my ATV; now so i can carry a little more gear..Like my custom 270 for the long range shots (Douglas Barrel) ... When i can drive my truck , I drive and spot from hills. I carry this compliment of rifles, all are zeroed in at a 100 yds,, One is universal, for Night vision scope or daytime.. If I am walking by ,myself , I opt for the DPMS 308 168 SST... In case i walk on to a sounder. I have a shotgun for the brush with OO and slugs... I can shoot the Savage at any range due to the glass i have on it... All rifles are grouping 1/8" or same hole at 100...We're predator hunters , what can i say. I love my rifles and shotguns.. Some areas i hunt may have 800 + yds to shoot.. Other areas may have 50 yds and woods...

I don;'t have a 22-250, but they are great for predators...I use my Savage 308 with a 110 gr VMAX.. Its accurate and 3100 fps ... It wipes out a hog too..

Hi folks,

Imagine the situation:


You are going out calling for foxes / coyotes, sitting on the ground. You are also in country with bears, bobcats and mountain lions might be encountered.


Main rifle is your trusty .223 Rem, .22-250Rem or .243W loaded with your chosen varmint bullet

1. A high powered handgun such as a 10mm or a .44mag revolver to keep on your person?
2. Do you take a 12g shotgun with something like buckshot in the tube for close in / running foxes and yotes with some slug handy if something large shows up?
3. A large bore rifle (Guide gun in .45-70 or maybe a chunky bolt action like a .338WM or .375H&H)
4. Don't worry about the risk, take a .22lr with subs for sneaky popping of other small varmints
5. You don't worry about it at all and just have your 'yote rifle with you

Personally, I would probably go with something like option 2 and 12g especially if hunting with a buddy

a 10 mm is not a high power handgun....but better than throwing stones. 44 mag is the baby for backup...with FMJ 's

My Hart 22-250 for the votes and glockzilla for anything else. (Glock g40 15+1 10mm) load the Glock with 180 grain gold dots as fast as I can get them

I look at it different for myself, I always carry, and its a Walthers PPQ 45... but if i was in bear country I would sling my Model 1300 on my back with )) buck and slugs in it,,,, You can argue all day about a pistol for stopping a bear...and thats a maybe...Most people don't know how fast a bear can get to you lol...and no matter how many rounds you have in that little pistol doesn't matter its where you hit, and its an unknown factor. I have killed some large boar hogs and sows with piglets..at very close range. (308 rifle). I stopped them but some took a lot of lead...My Son shot a boar at 100 yds , hit it in the right front shoulder , the bullet exited the left rear upper leg,, it still ran 100 yds. A 3006 put one down at 125 yds ,, it went feet up on its back..the rest of the hogs ran every which way and the one hit ran off too. It ran 75 yds before it dropped.. Now when you say be ready for a bear? It has to be the 12 ga shotgun ....something that makes the biggest hole and damage...
