If I were starting over with no rifles in the safe, I'd probably start with a JP Sauer 100 in 30-06. I could walk into most any sporting goods store and buy a box of ammo that could kill 95% (maybe 100% using 180gr Nosler partition ammo?) of the continent's critters out to 1/4 mile right outta the box.

Rifle + VX3 HD + scope mount + ammo under $2000 and should shoot sub MOA.

When you say big game that's pretty broad. For a big game cartridge I like the 375 ruger for long range I'm of the the likes that prefer the 7mm mag or 257 weatherby.

Just bought a Howa 6.5 PRC heavy barreled action from Brownells for $519 on sale. I have a MDT Oryx chassis it is going into I picked up on the December sale for a little over $200.
