After a couple of days of hunting. Stalked a group of bucks. Closed to 100 - 150 yards sneaking along a steep sidehill. Made the shot, using the sling to steady the rifle. Hardly long range, but they were moving towards me, while I moved towards them - which I didn't know... Then poof "Hey, there they are!" This one wasn't the biggest but gave me the best shot opportunity while I was trying to stay steady, keep from sliding down the ridge, and stay hidden as possible from him.
Rifle is a twenty year old Ruger Number One in 7mm Rem Mag, with a 3.5-10x Leupold. I bought it, very lightly used, last winter.
Handload was the 160 grain SPBT Sierra Gameking over 65 grains of Reloader 22 for 3050 fps. I put the shot a tad bit farther back than intended, but still got an instant drop & kill.
The deer steaks have been wonderful and the antlers are getting cut up for dog chew toys. Very pleased with the rifle and the hunt.
Also tagged a very average antelope, but he didn't look so good after the shot, so no photos were taken. The antelope meat too, has been excellent.
Regards, Guy
