I've lived in iowa all my life, and deer hunted the last 45 or so. 3 years ago, I shot a good 8 pt at 232 lasered yards with my 700 ULM, using a federal bor-lock bullet and 115 grains of Alliant Black MZ. The deer was DRT. Going smokeless isn't going to help you hit a deer at 175 yards. You can either shoot that far, or you can't. More practice would've killed that deer at 175 yards alot cheaper than a $3000 dollar smokeless mz.
Anytime you can add fps and take more drop out of the equation it definitely helps you make that shot. I constantly have killed whitetails and Sika out to 200 with my Encore muzzleloader, but adding the smokeless barrel turned that into 300 without a problem. So saying it doesn't help is just misleading. If you can't hit something at 175 like you are saying then it doesn't matter what you are using. But this is a long range site and I would hope that most can shoot past 300 , let alone 175

I laughed as I read your post.....sometimes the truth is not that easy to recognize....so u throw money at a problem. Like a golfer buying the newest greatest golf clubs to compensate for a terrible swing.
If the longest shot I'd ever be able to take was 200-225, I would likely just shoot an Encore with BH 209. But that isn't the case and I've taken one deer at 389yds and several just over 300 with my smokeless...and I don't think that would have been possible without the added energy and velocity.
But your point should be understood well before buying something to extend your range. You have to practice at longer distances before attempting to take an animal.
I've seen guys clean miss deer at 80-120 yds over and over with accurate centerfires, and the one thing they all had in common was they never went to range unless it was a week before deer season and they needed to "check their scope".......the scope was fine but the shooter was off.
I managed to really improve my skills in my backyard with an air rifle....the trigger is horrible but it made me better.
I also started hitting my targets more often when I discovered a little known item called a "jewell trigger"....lol. All jokes aside, a crisp trigger does make it easier but practice is necessary for almost any range.

Ha Ha "the scope was fine but the shooter was off" Priceless.
First pal of mine shoots his rifle a week before a deer hunt on the Arizona strip to "check the scope" He misses his first shot at 50 yards and the deer was so surprised he missed, that the buck just stood there so Pal #1 could put the deer down with the second shot.
Pal #2 Shot his rifle a few times but missed his Bedded buck at 90 yards and the deer ran off, luck however allowed him to smoke a forkhorn at 40 yards later that morning!
I practiced all summer long burning up around 225 rounds and when a 4x4 walked into an opening at 332 yards on a hillside I put my bullet right through his heart and dropped him in his tracks.
There is no substitute for knowing your rifle no matter what it may be.
A smokeless MZ is next on my list!

You are correct about practice. Nothing better. A smokeless is just way too much money for me to shoot Iowa whitetails at the ranges I normally encounter. I am upgrading both my Remington, a 700ML and a remington UML to shoot blackhorn by buying breech plugs from Arrowhead rifles, but that's about as much as I'll do.

I have a 10ml smokeless I would sell as I no longer hunt. It is camo stock with stainless barrell and accutrigger. It has a Swarovski Meopta scope(4x14x30mm) Very accurate and shot very little.
