Hello All. I'm interested in a m70 sporter In 25-06. I've had a few 25s but never a model 70. For those members that have had the newer m70. Can I get some info such as pros/cons fit and finish especially with a 25-06. Accuracy notes would also help. Thanks in advance.

I have 4 Model 70s, the only Sporter I have is in 300wsm. It is currently my favorite elk rifle. All of them that I have ever owned or shot function flawlessly and are at least MOA. I like them so much that I recently bought my son the Featherweight Compact in 7mm-08 for his first deer rifle.

Morning! Like caveman I've had, and currently have a M70. First was a sporter 223 with 24" bbl. One of the most wickedly accurate rifles I ever had. Currently hunting with M70 Fwt rebarreled 2 years ago from 280 Rem to 338-06 with 24" bbl. Couple of M70 accuracy tricks, float it, bed it, and make sure front and rear trigger guard screws are tight, middle screw just snug. My cousin has M70 in 25-06, deer killing machine. Go forward with faith and confidence. Good shooting

The only newer production M70 I have is an Extreme Weather in 6.5 Creed. I t is a well put together rifle. I have New Haven classic Sporters in .270 Win, .338 Win, and .270 Wby and a push feed Sporter Varmint in .243 Win. They are all very accurate reliable rifles. The wood has shrunk from the butt pad on all the sporters and the wood is all mostly tight grain and ho-hum, but I think that makes a more stable piece of wood. I would not be afraid to get either vintage M70, but the newer production are noticeably better fit and finish.

I have a new Winchester model 70 sporter 25-06 . So far it s as good as the other model 70 s in the safe. I've just put 40 rounds down to tube to break it in , cleaning it well along the way. You will like it

I think the M70 Winchester is what a bolt action rifle ought to be, Yes, I would absolutely recommend a new m70. I had one minor issue with mine. Beside that, I have been completely enjoyed shooting it.

My cousin just bought a m70 in a sporter 25-06, 22" barrel for his antelope hunt later this year and grabbed some factory ammo just to get it on paper for a starting point and sight in and at 100yds this was what it did after we got a rough sight in on Memorial Day. Now he will take it back and start working a solid load and get that a lil tighter.

Also me and my father has shot a M70 7mm rem Mag for 20+ years and its been a killing machine! Love that rifle!

I edited this to add a picture of his gun. I think it's a fine looking gun and very light

Are the three clumped together the 1st 3?

CDNN Sports is having a sale on Winchester M70s. That 325wsm looks interesting too me.

I have one of the newer "Baco" M70s, a Supergrade in 280 Remington. I haven't been very impressed so far; I have tried 2 different bullets and 3 different powders and ~1-1.25MOA has been the name of the game so far. This may be my fault as I am shooting 160gr bullets (rifle has 1:10 twist). Finish on the stock is mediocre, I actually like the satin finish they are putting on newer rifles, but there's no real detail in the woodgrain, and the inlet isn't square (barrel nearly touching one side of the channel and big gap on opposite side. Ive seen the same issue with Remingtons so... take that however you want to.

I had an older Post-64 "Classic" Featherweight that was one of the last generations to be produced in New Haven, and it was a shooter. Had a 'smith tune the trigger to 4lbs and it would shoot consistent .5-.75MOA with factory ammo. It got stolen about 6 years ago though.

So from my example of 1... the new ones arent too exciting.

I've got 3 new production model 70's. A FWT 308, FWT 30-06, and an EW 30-06. The 308 is a South Carolina gun, the FWT 06 I believe is made in SC and assembled in Portugal, and the EW is Portugal. The fit and finish is great on all 3, with the 06 FWT being the nicest. All three adjusted down to 3 lbs or 3.5 lbs with no creep or overtravel. I have shot the EW the most by far since it's in a mcmillan now and is the most comfortable to shoot. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. The first pic is the 308 obviously with nosler ammo off a rickety table, the second is from the EW with a 180 Sierra prohunter over hunter shot prone , and the 3rd is the same load through the 06 FWT off a bench.
