Going to be rebarreling my son's short action Remington 700. It is currently a .243 with a 16in barrel and Lota Krux stock. I am going to go with a 21 or 22" CF barrel and I am having a hard time coming to a decision on which caliber I should chamber it to. 284 win, 6.5x284, 7mm-08 or or something else?
I will be adding that wyatt's mag extenion if .284 or 6.5x284 so can load out to 2.95 oal

6.5x284 reamer on hand, as well as brass and bullets from my other 6.5 rifles; Swede and Creed.

help me out, let's hear it!

If I go 6.5 I will be shooting the 127LRX or 120etip and if I go 7 mm I want to shoot the 140E tip or 145LRX. Either 6.5 or 7 I want to be around 3000' fps

Personally, I would not run a .284 Norma or 6.5-.284 in a short action. I would want an XM (3.200") or LA. I have 3 buddies that run those, and .25-.284s, and they all have XM or LA. Unless you want to single feed.

What about .260AI? Or 6.5SLR? Either can still use your .243 Win brass to form. 6.5SLR is a single pass through a die to be 95% formed.

6.5CM, .260 Rem, 6.5SLR, .260AI (seated long for now)

You mentioned 7-08 so my opinion is:
1. 7mm-08
2. Do the mag extension

IMO anything 284 in a short action with a short barrel ham string the caliber and the potential gain is not worth the reduction in mag capacity.

Nothing wrong with a 6.5CM especially if you have the loadings in inventory. Still do the mag extension.

No question .284. You can get enough brass to last a lifetime in case they stop. I would not go less than 24" since you get to pick the length. If you want something else the 7-08 in the same rig.

Since you re shooting 140 gr class bullets have you given any thoughts to 7 CM ? Likely it'd run in standard length magazine well and give 7-08 performance without infringing on case capacity or Mag limits ….

A thought.

Pick a caliber and then pick a cartridge that will fit a short action. 6.5-284 is not it generally. If you want to leave the bolt face alone then stick with a non-magnum short action. If you desire to cut the face and open it to a magnum then SS, PRC, SAUM would all be good choices.

I'd suggest a look at the .284 win. It has the same capacity as the 280 AI, shorter case length, quality brass is available...
Expect a 100-150 fps over the 7-08. 52 gr of RL 17 and 150 accubonds ought to get you to about 2950 fps even in your 21' barrel. Just a thought. Good luck with the build.

I run a 6x284 on a short action and barely get by, I would listen to the others and advise against a 284/6.5x284 on a short action.

I have a 6.5x47L with a 22" barrel that runs 2950ish with the 120gr NBT's. and a case full of Varget.
