What twist?

The one thing I have learned with Hammer's is "park" what you think you know and listen up. I learn something new every time I shoot them. One absolute for me is harder I drove them, the more accurate they were for me. I am using 1:8 for my ".270TH" but like to get a 1:7 next!
Wonder what would happen with a 3r gain twist going from about an 8 to a 6 and a 130gr hammer started about 3400? Be bad news for anything it hit, if it wouldn't strip the rifling.

You all got me thinking. My RUM could use a new barrel. One has to wonder just how heavy a hammer you could break 4k fps with the 300 RUM and a barrel like I posted above. It kills deer like Thor's hammer with bonded 200 gr bullets now. It would be like shooting lightning bolts... Hum....

Mines a 10 twist and @ 4218 the SF is 3.2

Bad information presented as "fact" hurts the shooting community and at times can be very dangerous. Best to correct it and move on.
sorry it's not as much as I thought with heavy bullets. Barrel whip might be increased on smaller diameter barrels

I'm going to get some to play with. 2 more quick questions. You use a faster powder or retumbo? How bad do they tear deer up? I blew one in half with a 190ablr

I had a 1:10" .25-06AI for 12+ years. Shot a 115 @ 3450fps, or 100 TTSX @ 3600+.

My 1:7.5" 25SST can push the 131 BJ @ 3300+, and I am running the 121 HH @ 3414fps. Am working on the 135 LR Hyb too. All are insanely accurate. So use this for comparable speeds. I kind of want to test the 115 VLD, but really have no use for them.

A buddy's straight 1:10" .25-06 is pushing the 100TTSX @ 3420 at the top end. He can get the 115 VLD to 3270.

I would not go down to a 1:8" in my 25SST. So in your slightly slower .25-06, if it were me, I would go 1:7.5" too. Unless you are considering the 128 Hammer Hunter as well. Then the 1:7" makes sense. But unless you are shooting very thin jacketed varmint bullets at 3600+, you will be fine.

Thank you Sir. Appreciate the information. I was thinking the 1-7.5" with the feedback I've received. I have a NIB Remington 700 ultimate I'm going to put on the market pretty soon, and assuming I can get a grand for it, I'm going to send my 70 Winchester to Hill Country Rifles and have them rebarrel it and cerakote it.

The main reason I went with 1-8 instead of 1-7.5 was the wait time . I went with the Douglas xx premium air gage ,they don't want do half twist . I had my barrel back chambered and headspaced in 3 weeks . The other barrel makers had a 6 month too a yr or more wait time Bartlein etc but they will build any thing you want good luck on your new build
