I am looking at a scope Doug has on sale.It has a Mil Dot reticle. It has a zero stop and lots of Elevation adjustment.I want to use it for PD Hunting.Any comments would be helpful thanks,Huntz

Mils are just an angular measurement there are 6280 mils in a circle. There are 21,600 minutes in a circle. The mil dot scope has dots for every 1 mil that can be used for ranging. Newer reticles are usually hash marks at 1/2 mil. There are also MOA hash that are based on minute of angle. All can be used for holdover without dialing drop.

At 100yds a mil subtends 3.6" while a MOA subtends 1.047".

As for use its really personal preference. But beware of scopes that have mil reticles and MOA turrets. That is nothing but confusion.

A mildot on a rifle scope was originally used to "range" targets. So you measure a target of known size and use a mathematical formula to come up with the range. The easy way to use one is range a target with a rangefinder and either use the reticle or dial in the drop. If you miss you can quickly adjust if you see the miss by just using the reticle. For PD hunting you'll want to make sure the reticle isn't too thick that it'll completely cover up your PD. It's pretty helpful beyond 300 yards. Inside 300 yards it's not really needed, but is still helpful.
