If you did not have a deer rifle (maybe a very rare hunting of a black bear) and wanted to buy one for 300 yard shots and in, which cartridge rifle would you be buying?

7mm rem mag if going long action or 260 remington if going short, 6.5 cm would work to

As stated above .30-06 or .270 Winchester. Black bears can get very large, the record kills are 600-700 pounds. That's a lot of animal to shoot at 27 minutes after sun down at 30 yards with a 6.5....
I've killed zebra and Blue Wildebeest with .30-06, 180 gr Nosler Partitions. My Black Bear (no record here) I shot with 130 gr Winchester power Point out of a .270 Winchester. I shot two Caribou with a .308 Winchester using 165 gr Speer SPBT, but for their size they died very easy. All one shot kills, except the second Caribou which needed a finishing shot.

Shot deer with .30-06, .270 Win and .308 Win. All very effective.

Good Luck

My choice would be 6.5 Creedmor, .260 Remington, 6 mm Remington or 6 mm Creedmoor. A 7mm-08 would work equally well.

I doubt that bear killed with the 130 grain .270 would have died any slower if he had been shot in the same place with a 140 grain 6.5 Creedmoor or .260 remington.

Less recoil ... more fun shooting...

.358 win

Honourable mention, 338Fed, but long bullets don't pair well with a short case. Heard it's amazing with 160-180gr monos, but have no personal experience.

A 225gr .358 bullet doesn't crowd the powder column, and lands with authority disproportionate to the .308 case size.

7mm-08, .308 Win, or .260 AI gets my vote.

If .308 or .260 Rem, then a Rem 700 5R Milspec GenII gets my vote. I wish they offered them in 7mm-08.

I would think a .308 or 30-06 even a 7MM RM would all get it done nicely.
Thinking of a possible bear caused me to up the power a tad?
