What’s your five? 5 Calibers to do it all...

.22-250 Rem
.240 Wby. or 6mm Rem.
.280 Rem.
.270 Wby.
.375 H&H
If someone MADE me, and I would hide a 16 ga. that they wouldn't know about.
I'll give you the 16ga and a 22 LR as freebies. Everybody needs a good shotgun and a 22. I didn't put the 22-250 on my list but it is right up near the top and would certainly get an honorable mention. Second bolt gun I ever owed was in 22-250. A Remington 700 BDL varminter with a 26" bull barrel. Pretty gun, shot lights out, was a mid to late eighties model, I've owed a half dozen others since then. Second best group I ever shot was with one .224 5 shot @ 200 was just under a half inch hole and scored the bore diameter.😊 The funny thing was I had been contemplating selling that particular gun because it wouldn't shoot the 69gr pills like the Remington, but turned out it loved a 55gr vmax. Good memories and good times!

Here's my go at it.

- 22mag
- 264winmag
- 308
- 300wm or 30Nos. I've had a 300wm and am waiting on a 30Nos. One may shine more than the other when it's all said and done. Time will tell.
- And last but not least my beloved 338 Lapua.

I don't plan on moving to Africa so I'll forego the giant calibers.

First choices + (alternate in brackets)
17 HMR (.22LR) - the "givens" + 12 Ga.

22-250 (223 Rem)
6.5x55AI (6.5-284)
270 Win (280 AI)
300WSM (300WM)
375 H&H (338WM)

While my favourites are in first column, I think I'd honestly be just as happy with my alts in brackets - heck I'd like to have them all!
I know it is a lot harder than you think to just choose 5 and cover all the bases. I almost put the 6.5×284 Norma on my list. Was my favorite benchrest cartridge in the 90's and I really like the 6.5x55 AI. You really can't go wrong with either of those in my book.

As I don't shoot game beyond my self-imposed 600 yard limit, my 5 is only 3......4 if I include my handgun! memtb

* 22 rim fire......self-explanatory
* .223 Rem......varmints
* .375AI......all hunting from varmints to the largest game I will encounter
* optional 4th cartridge... 460 S&W handgun

How do you like the 375 AI? What kind of ballistics are you getting with It? I have been contemplating one for sometime.

22lr
25-06
300 win mag
378 Weatherby
10mm auto
Just sold my 30-378 wby to fund a new build. The 378 is a good all around choice I think. It like the 375 H&H can be loaded up or down with the exception that the 378 can really push the bigger pills, making it a consideration for an awesome 600 plus elk or moose or what ever cartridge. It could be the answer for a true one and done Africa gun.

.22 LR - short range rodents and hard candy targets
.20P - cheap to shoot rodent rifle, good for 400 with 40Vmax's
.22-.250 - little more expensive than above but good to 880 and more with pointy 75-80 grain bullets
6mm CM - everybody tells me how good they are and lots of pointy bullets can be had
.375-.338 - comforting when something might tear my body apart or stomp it or sling it up into bushes - big fat heavy bullets

Now and then a .223 or 6.5-06 works its way into the first 5. 1911, .45 Auto always present but not counted, no intentions of hunting with it..

Great thread!

I was considering a 375/338 AI to get into the 2 mile game with but have abandoned the idea and opted to build another 6.5 instead. There is just no where around here to shoot or attempt shooting that far, about 2000 is the most we can get. A 375/338 Ackley would be awesome though! I may have to reconsider???🤔

Ok, here goes

22 LR - birds and squirrels
243 - deer and smaller game (could backup on larger game too at close range)
280 REM - overall hunting
45-70 - just in case there is a dinosaur
357 Mag as a sidearm

Everything else from my safe would be destroyed in a sharknado and whereabouts unknown..... if anyone happened to ask.
