My brother had his rifle for some time after he passed years ago, beginning of this year my brother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer so he passed it on to me. Our uncle for some reason we shall never know used a dark red stain and brushed on shellac, it took away the true beauty of the rifle. I stripped it, sanded, used Arts French red stain and wood filler, 6 coats of truoil and buffed it out with a magic eraser to cut the gloss but not make it foggy looking, also steel wool and oil to polish the blueing out. Uncle Mick bought it new in 1954, Winchester model 71 in .348
