It looks like a battery backup ,or battery pack? not sure if the hippies left it or my old friend made it .

Can't see if the batteries are wired in series or parallel. Any chance it was a portable 3 volt power source? Maybe for a really old cell phone?

Yes he was married 3 times , and probably divorced at least once for stealing Tupperware.

Looks like series wired D-cell holders for a 3 volt supply. The heads are positive to negative.

If you expand the photo the diagram inside the battery 🪫 cradle shows the poles to be opposite. Not sure if that means in a series or parallel??

My guess was for flashlight , forgot to mention,he also had a flashlight collection that was mostly donated to historical Society, I got to keep a few, I’ll post some pics someday.
He also had his own strain of tomatoes, so it also could have been a tomato shocker .
