To AI or not to AI

I built one because I loved the 6mm and AI'ing it made it just look sexy. The other advantages have been stated, less trimming and some velocity.
Tho' I hesitated to say it before, simply the appearance of the AIed cartridge is appealing to my eye. Whether the velocity increase is significant or not, it's worth it to be "just a little different"

To AI. The improved versions have several advantages over the standard offerings as others have mentioned. Brass life and improved performance being the highlights. Fire forming is a process but if you love to shoot it gives you another reason (if you need one). My experience with AI's includes the 22-250 AI, 25-05AI and 280AI. They are all great choices in my opinion and all deliver improved performance over the parent cartridge. Good luck and have fun whatever you decide.

i am a novice in the world or reloading, just wanted to get that out there. I see alot of different AI rounds from 260, 25-06, 280 but I guess my question just sticking with the 280, what does a 280AI bring to table vs just getting a 7mm rem mag. I mean I get it, it's not too hard to fire form the brass, but just asking if it's worth that

.280 AI Load Data
168-gr. (.280 Ackley Improved Max Load = 2970-fps in a 24-inch barrel.)
168-gr. (.280 Remington Max Load = 2852-fps in a 26-inch barrel.)

You can, but it's more involved than that. The Nosler magnums are based off a shortened RUM (parent case is .404 Jeffery) case. Therefore, it would be best to start with a long action RUM factory chambered rifle, and build from there. Using a standard and standard magnum receiver, you will need to have the feed rails opened up on the bottom of the receiver, ditch the bottom metal, follower, and mag box for a RUM setup, and you will need have the bolt face opened up. Much easier to just start with a 7mm or .300 RUM rifle, strip it down, and build from there.
To add to this I would also either get an action that allows a Wyatt's box or have a gunsmith cut it for a Wyatt's box. Having 3.825 coal is real nice when shooting the heavies so as to not take away so much powder space.

Can you not make the 06 which is a standard length action into a 28nosler, just have to open bolt face up a lil? And you get a lot more zoom lol. I am not arguing I am really just debating for my knowledge benefit.

i ai lots of calibers.brass is big saver.my project now is a 338 lapua mag. ai
Be very careful. It's more addictive than tobacco, morphine, and women... OK I made that up. You're gonna love it! Here's my loads in a 32" Bartlien gainer (1:9.5 to 1:8):
107.5 GN RL26 Petersen GM215M 256 GN Flatline===3410fps single digit ES
103 GN RL26 Petersen GM215M 285 GN Flatline===3174fps single digit ES
Bullets are hBN'd as is the barrel--I "clean" it with hBN and I'm on the fourth reload with the brass. I anneal every reload and follow up with three hours in the SS pin tumbler. Love it.

Wild Rose has asked the important question. Will this be a hunting rifle? Will the game be Whitetail, Mule Deer, Antelope or similar Game? Will the range usually be 100 to 300 yards, with the rare 400 yard shot ? For me that all means a.270 Win, with a 130 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet or /130 Grain Combined Tech Bullet at 3050 fps . I still use 59.5 grns H 4831 in matched Win cases ,in a Weatherby Ultralight Rifle with a 24 inch BBL. Elk Sized game, and I will use my .300 Weatherby Mag. with a 165 grn or possible 180 grn Bullet . Just my personal choice and opinion. If you Love to tinker and 'IMPROVE " on a classic factory offering you will have fun making AI 's .
