These nasty little creatures strike without warning and drive us all mad from time to time and in some cases it doesn't seem to matter what we do they just appear out of nowhere.

I came across a good article on the subject from Accurate Shooter. I can't say as I agree with all of his points but it's a very good article that digs down on many of the more common causes, so I thought I'd share it.

Howdy, great article. Out of all the above that was stated. In the end- it's Me. The last couple years as I get older (62) I only had flyers a couple times a year. Now it every other group. But I don't care anymore, I do everything for fun now. Happy shooter. 😎

That probably comes under the heading of "shooter induced errors" Ie, "Shaky Shooter Syndrome" as I've labeled it! 🤣 .

I had to requalify as an LTC instructor last week and my instructor for the qualification, a lifetime friend really gave me hell about it because he could see I was no longer as steady as I was in my younger years. Heck, I even had 3 shots out of the bull!

I've been running the tape in my head so to speak remembering how the bench guys I knew for many years were really insistent on at least swabbing out the bore between shots with a damp patch to remove any fouling to keep their groups tight.

It now makes a lot more sense to me.

The problem is, in the field those first 3 shots, one shot and two follow ups if the animal doesn't drop in it's tracks will change conditions inside the bore quite a bit with the fouling from each shot.

That's why I look for the best 3 shot groups I can get because additional shots don't really matter much for our purposes.

It isn't often you'll get more than 2 quick follow ups on a wounded critter.

That would be the difference I guess in "Field Accuracy" and "Inherent Accuracy of The Rifle" as discussed in the article.

I foul my barrel before my hunt. And leave it that way tell after hunting season over. Year's ago I started doing that. Thanks

Same here. I deep clean them right after hunting season, then sight in as the new season comes along. Clean it again fire three shots for "foulers" and to double check zero.

My friends and clients both used to laugh saying if a gun passed the "WildRose Test" they know it would perform under any circumstances, any condition.

When you guide 180-200 days straight through gun cleaning is the last thing on your mind.
