All others are obsolete.
Done the at a few timesssssnake,
I've seen photos like this on backpacking sites. AND I've seen a few really heavy packs on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. Amazing what some people think they "need" for the trail.
At the southern end of the AT the first section is known as "The Trail of Gears". People just leave unnecessary gear at the side of the trail - true story, it happens every year. I once hiked with a thru-hiker named "Skillet" B/C he started the AT with a small cast iron skillet! All thru hikers get a handle for a trait they have.
