The LRH Annealing Article

I bought this off eBay - it's just a double-gang box with a GE lighting rheostat (600 watts, I think, since the melter is 500 watts), controlling a duplex outlet. The guy put a red bulb in one of the outlets to remind him that his melter is on and getting power. It works well - I put the melter's thermostat on high, then once I found the right spot on the dial, it held the melter's temperature at around 503 C. It'd be easy to build for anyone who finds their melter's temperature swings too widely.
