I've looked around on tons of the other forums looking for LongRange rifle info. This forum seems to be the 'cats meow' when it comes to Long Range knowledge. I've read about the .338 Edge (phenomenal long range wind bucking capabilities that you pay for with phenomenal recoil or gun weight). I've read about .338 Lapua's, 300Rums, 7mmRUM's etc. I've drooled over the Allen Magnums, even dreamed about the 200gr Wildcat and a 277AM (too bad I woke up in the middle of that one, best dream I've had since puberty /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif ).
Now I need a nice way to determine which one of these will be added to my collection; trouble is, there isn't any comparison that shows the dozen most popular LR calibers in a side by side comparison with the specialty loads that are being used by the experts on this forum.
I've looked at the freeware ballistics programs and have done comparisons of many 'factory loadings' (these just don't compare to the 'worlds best loadings' that folks discuss here on the forum).
So, the question. Has anyone put together a comparison of the specialty loadings ? Nothing fancy, just Velocity, drop, energy, wind drift out to 1000 or 1500 yards ? Maybe even have a couple of the more popular factory loadings for comparison (30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag) so novices can REALLY understand just what a long barrelled fire breathing dragon of a rifle can do.
If nobody has that, I'll volunteer to compile the info into a spreadsheet. All I need are some simple numbers from the forum. I'll run them through my 'freeware' ballistic programs and try to show them in a fair light. Of course to be fair, I'll need to know barrel length etc. (in fact any info you can give).
I've found some info on this forum, but my searches may not be doing all the LR calibers justice. So if you want your pet load/rifle listed, send me some info.
Bill Bailey sent me some info on .270AM Its listed below as an example:
...I can tell you for the 270 AM, use a BC of .740 for the 169.5 WC. We are pushing these between 3400-3450 fps with full tilt loads.
As far as the 185 gr goes, I would use a BC of .820 + or - for some estimates. I don't think 3200 fps is out of the question w/the 270 AM and this bullet. .. 30" barrel..
Thanks for your time,
AJ
