Spiral VS. Lateral cut muzzle brakes

My 30-378 Wby. has the stock spiral cut muzzle brake and it works well EXCEPT, for shooting prone and the mushroom cloud of dust it produces... Was curious as to if any of you boomers with 30/338-378's out there that may have switched brakes...
Only spiral brake I have is on the wife's rifle because she never shoots prone

I went with a holland timed brake on my 30-378. I met and talked to Darrell Holland on several occasions like dinner because he was originally a friend of a friend. He was designing brakes for many years. They we hunting buddies.

He said that you have several things going on. total surface area of the side vents, MB width, and clearance from the bullet to the muzzle brake inner diameter.

When I was burning 120 grains of US 869 I needed big area 2 inch MB

The radial brakes are the worst brakes I have ever used. The first ones (Vais and Quiet brake), I could not get rid of it fast enough. I have one at the moment (Vais) because I bought a used rifle that I can resist the price, and it came with it. There are many side-ported muzzle brakes out there that are far more effective than what you have. Good luck with your decision.

One of the best in my opinion is ,SSG of straight shot gun smithing in North Dakota. Nate is highly respected here and is Incredible person to boot. Cheers

I bought these holland brakes when he came here for a gun show for $100 each (now $175) and I had a local gun smith thread my barrels so when it tightened on it was perfectly straight. They were installed on my magnums 30-376 and wildcat 7 STW. Neither had the top vent holes because I had straight target type stocks.

Holland Radial Baffle Quick Discharge Muzzle Brakes – Darrell Holland has made muzzle brakes since the 70's, which is way before any of these other guys. His designs have inspired most of the models you see on the market, and he continues to come out with improved versions. He is truly a pioneer in this area. His latest innovation is the Radial Baffle brake, which Darrell says "trap the gas and divert it around the shooter in a rearward direction, increasing the recoil reduction over a 90 degree exhaust pattern. Radial baffles increase the surface area for the gas to work against, providing exceptional performance." I had caliber-specific versions for 6mm, 6.5mm, and 30 caliber in both the 0.985" profile and 1.25" profile versions of this brake.

dropped comb stocks promote muzzle rise and can benefit from type especially the ones that are threaded holes. You can insert allen plugs and tune them. Like block off one of the three top holes.

I don't have anything near a 30-378, but this Harrell's brake works great on my 7mm RM. I had kind of a hard time finding a brake that would fit my 1.25" diam. barrel and look right. I have only shot it from the bench, but I had my son video me shooting and you can definitely see it clearing the dust from the bench. I have also had some friends comment on the sound when standing off to the side.

That is exactly what the poster wants to get rid of! :) Those can't be used on a bipod because of the amount of dust that they blow up.

I use piercision rifles muscle brakes on everything. Ryan's 5 port brake turned my 10 pound 338 edge into a pup, enabling me to spot hits at 400 yards and beyond through my scope at 25 X. The 5 port I put on my 28 nosler brought the recoil down to a stiff .243 winchester but the rifle stays flat through the whole recoil process enabling me to see hits at 200 yards and sometimes closer if I really bear down on it. Can't say enough good things about Ryan and his products.

My choices depending on rifle
1) brake with tuner (cortina) - accurate
2) Side port with tuneable top ports (APA)
3) low cost side port (MBM) - titanium avail
4) Terminator T3/T4 - very effective

Yeah, I have wondered why most of the stock rifles I see with brakes included are radial, when we all know that they kick up dust when shooting prone. (It's all I ever see on Proofs. - can they even accept a side portedbrake?) Or maybe the newbie or casual buying public don't know about the dust issue? They look cool, so maybe that's why manufacturers are using them. but I shoot in the wilderness a lot and at 300 on out so that means plenty of prone practice. That's likely how I would be thanking a long range hunting shot. A rifle without a brake even kicks up a lot, so sometimes I cover the ground below/in front of the muzzle. I have a side ported JP on my 7RM which also has 4 small round holes on top and kicks up less than a smaller caliber with no brake.

Darrell's QD 3-port was the first MB I have in 2003 and I still have it on my .300 WM.
