Speeding up the 224 heavies?

We always need a new toy, right?
Debating a 224 caliber build to run 80-90gr bullets above 3300. Thinking but, not limited to Swift, 22/284 or 22 Cheetah with fast twist 24-26" barrel. There are some who say this is impossible due to constraints of caliber/bullet length/twist ratios. The contention is that if you get a twist suitable to stabilize the bullet length, it works against velocity (<3100) and/or bullet integrity will go to pieces due to hyper-twist above 3100.

I definitely see the logic of these constraints but, i have yet to find a guy who has actually experienced these limitations.

I know several of you guys have experience in this department? is it possible to accurately run the heavies above 3300? What say you?

Note: they make barrels everyday—-barrel life not a concern!!!

I have shot the 85.5 Bergers up to 3300. Only doing a latter test so I need to do some more work. I have also shot 75g amaxs at 3500 with great results. Trying the 85.5 to help with less wind drift. The 85.5s at 3300 will be almost 1/2 the wind drift as my 75g at 3500. I haven't found pressure yet with the 85.5. I'm shooting the 85.5 in a 22-243 with a 26" barrel and rl26, the 75g amaxs are with h4831sc.

Actually mines an 8twist. But I also have a blackhole weaponary barrel poly rifling they claim more velocity and a lot of times don't need as fast of a twist, but I'm not so sure on that. My cousin shoots a 22-243ai he has shot 80geldm fireforming at like 3500, his fire formed load is with 77g tmk at 3600. That's with a brux 1.8 twist barrel, he used h4831sc with the 80s, and rl23 with the 77s.

In my 22" 8 twist creedmoor I got just over 3300 doing a ladder with 80eldm's and H4350. Backed down to a conservative 3230 node. I would think that a 26" barrel would comfortably have you over 3300 with the 80 class bullets.

IMO, the best route is to go 22-243 (plain). It's a simple matter to get Lapua 243 brass and just run it through a 22-243 FL die. I was originally running a 22-243AI with 75gr A-Max moly bullets at 3,670 ft/sec. The accuracy was unbelievable. I've got a 600yd target around here somewhere with a .625" group on it.

I'm currently shooting a 22-243 (plain) just for convenience. I'm still using the same custom barrel but had the barrel set back 2" before rechambering. I'm running a Berger 82gr LR bullet at 3,450 ft/sec with RE23. Sub .5moa @ 400yds is common.

Love the 220 swift. My twist won't allow for such heavy bullets but I get great results with 50 grain Sierra blitzKing . 3950+fps real barrel burner

We've been doing this for sometime using the 22-250AI in 1/8 tw 26" and 7828SSC. No issues at all. One shooter uses a 220Swift-AI in 1/8 tw with RL26. We use chambers throated for the 75 and heavier bullets, so we can seat them out for added powder capacity.

I have pushed 80's 3400 out of a 22-6MM with an 8TW. I don't think a faster twist would be a good idea. A gunsmith friend of mine shoots 75's in a 9TW.

I have a fantastic shooting 220 Swift fast twist! Hart barrel on a Rem 700 action. This gun shoots 1/2 moa at 400 yards all day with the 80 grain Sierras. I have never even done any match brass, just factory shot 3-4 times! Full lenght resized and shot-period. I haven't even chrono'ed it, why?
