Sierra's 1st Elk

Just got back from our Elk hunt with my daughter, Sierra, from a working cattle ranch near Sanderson TX. This ranch is massive at over 350,000 acres of low fence operation. Bulls were in rut so bugling was required and it worked. Sierra was using the re-barreled Remington Sendero in 300 Win and the Leupold Mark 4 scope and hand loaded ammunition. Had the "come-up" card ready to go up to 650 yards just in case. Perfect morning with just a little fog at first light. The first morning, our guide bugled and cow called and we would get 3-4 different bulls responding back to us from all directions. This bull responded back from the heavy treed bottom area and started his approach. We spotted this bull from the creek bottom at 400 yards. Our guide bugled him in towards us. The terrain was very dense with mesquite & cedar and we lost, found, lost him again thru all the heavy brush with only the tips of his antlers showing. And he kept coming straight at us. Finally he stepped out at 110 yards. Sierra placed the 212g ELD-X bullet from the 300 Win Mag right behind his shoulder as he was quartering away from us. He turned, took one step, and dropped. Found the bullet remains just under the hide on the opposite shoulder and it retained 59g of the weight. Those ELD-X's are just plan great bullets. Our guide, Hunter Hughes, once again did a fantastic job on getting us into a lot of great bulls and cows. View attachment 153008
