I put in for 27-1 in Idaho, wondering if anyone has some insight on where to find the dang things. What do I look for mostly. I’ve elk hunted up there with no success an thought it looked more like sheep country than elk so I put in for it. I caught the sheep big when I got my desert sheep a couple years ago.

Always best to hire an outfitter who knows that area well. I know in WY Sheep can be found from up in the snow right down to several 1000' below the snow line.

My last one was self guided an I’d like to try an keep it that way if I can. I’m a little hard headed when it comes to that lol. If I cant find any scouting I got a friend of mine that’s hunted it quite a bit.

Sheephuntr - I have no experience with hunting in Idaho. Can you describe what that the country is like in the unit you have applied for? Elevation, terrain, cover, etc. What makes it look like sheep country to you?

Elevation ranges from almost 10,000 feet down to about 4,000 at the river I believe. It’s rocky an steep, not a whole lot of water either.

If you contact the fish and game they will give you a harvest map of where the last 10 years or so of sheep have been harvested. Should help you get started. Looks like either from the river up or from the top down. A few airstrips to choose from as well. I guided on the river for the better part of ten years so it’s tempting to have a river expedition experience but river logistics can be a limitation. If you have time do a week from river access and a week from fly-in. I’m applying for 27-2 but might eventually try for 27-1. Also if you contact all the biologists some of the previous people who harvested have made their contact info available. Lots to learn! Good luck, you will need it:)
