I am currently pushing a 140gr Berger VLD Hunting bullet 2915fps out of a shilen select match grade 1-8" twist barrel that is 27" long. I am wondering if this is an optimal velocity for the caliber and bullet. So, please post up your load data and results for your 6.5-.284. I am thinking about testing new powders if need be. I am using IMR4350 but I don't have my load data in front of me right now so I am unsure how much powder is in the load.

been shooting this round for over 12 years now and i like RL 22 and RL 25
i will take a good grouping load over speed any day of the week. cuz in the end that is what matters the most for putting meat in the freezer.
only after i have worked up a load that shoots the best i can get it then i will check to see just how fast it is going .

norma brass
54 gr. RL- 25
fed 210 match primers
speed ? well never met an elk that could tell how fast the bullet was
that killed him lol

or

norma brass
52.5 gr. RL- 22
fed 210 match primer

Depends on your chamber I use lighter loads in a couple 30" barreled bench guns and have data from my new 26" hunting rifle.
30" 8 twist .130" freebore no turn neck chamber, 139grn lapua scenar Norma brass .010" in the lands 49.8grns Imr4350 CCI BR2 primer 3.133" OAL 3020fps 4-6fps ES, 53.5grns H4831sc nets the same velocity but the ES is 8~10. Does the same with bergers but OAL is 3.204"
My hunting rifle is a 26" 8.3 twist with a kiff 6.5x284norma match chamber, 140 amax 3.134" .060" jump 57.5grns H1000 3012fps 18-20 ES or 59.5grns of Retumbo for 3076fps ES 7-9, both with Fed215M primers and tested in Norma and Lapua brass, this also gives about the same results with bergers at 3.174" .056" jump.
I have tried H4350, 4831sc, RE22, RE25, Imr4350,4831, and Magpro, I just can't get the speed out of the shorter barrels with the hotter powders.
(Note the Retumbo load runs almost 3200fps out of a 30" barrel) the only reason I don't use this is it is to fast for a true 8 twist and the accuracy falls off.
A good hunting load for out to 6-700 yards is a 129grn interlock jumped .060" in front of 55grns of H4831sc with a 210M primer for 3147fps ES around 13.
I haven't ruled out Imr 7828ssc yet it is showing some promise.
I'm NOT responsible for anyones ignorance, obviously work up to these, save face, literally!

6.5x284 Load
53.0gr 7828
140 Berger VLD Hunting Bullets
CCI Large Primer
COL 3.100
3010 fps
Lapua Brass
Brux Barrel 27 1/2 inch This load shoots awesome in my gun

Currently:
140 grain Berger Hunting VLD
50.5 grains H4831SC
Fed GM210M primer

Nearly straight up 2800 fps with a factory Savage barrel. 26" long but has the adjustable muzzle brake that I leave turned off.

Just got some Retumbo to play with.

Great thread.

Has anyone tried Reloader 17?

I did. The velocities were great, accuracy was okay at 100.

The ES was pretty bad and it heated my barrel up a lot faster that H4831SC. Had a ton of blast too. I would have dealt with the last two if the ES was lower.

I was using 139 grain Lapua Scenars and GM210M primers.
