Got one I've never seen before
Customer brought in a seekins La Havak action and barrel blank.

Looked like a Rem 700 pattern so I said I would do it.

Then, I this removable sleeve inside the action that mates up with the bolt head and probably the barrel somehow.

What have I gotten myself into here?

Seekins hasn't responded yet so looking for help non what this thing is for and how to cut it.

The first barrel I did was a Seekins short action. They sent me this print, I'm sure they'll send you one for a long action.

Put it together and take/verify their numbers just like you would any other action. I'm personally not a fan of the sleeve, but mine is a 7-08 and it shoots well. I've since gave it to my Dad since it was the first barrel I ever did…one day I'll get it back and it'll have even more meaning than when I first gave it to him.

Good luck, but you'll be fine.

Ok. So that little cut out is allow for the sleeve?
Seems odd. That piece that juts out - does there need to be some slot in the barrel face?

That cut out on top aligns with the pin in the top of the action:

I don't like it either, they are an AR company and use those pins on the AR barrel sleeves.

The short action face is a little different but all this fits within that small cone that you cut in the face of the barrel.

Not suggesting you moving before you see the LA print, was just trying to put you at ease that you hadn't agreed to do something that was going to be a mess. ;)

Thank you for explaining it. I'll keep bugging them for a drawing

can't get a hold of anyone at seekins. They did send me the drawing of how to cut the barrel but it makes no sense. That .625 inset and 130degree champfer is weird and they don't show how it affects the chamber cut. Very weird

These are the only two pictures I have…I'd pull the barrel but it's 900+ miles away from me. I hope this helps but if the LA print looks like the one above, you're making it more difficult than it needs to be. Don't feel bad, I'm my own worst enemy too ;)

Ok so cut the threads, got it.
What is that notch in front of the shoulder? Doesn't show a dimension?

The 130 degree bevel at .625? I'm not sure how to measure/cut that. Since the center is floating in space.
And then did you just use the chamber reamer after that? Does it matter how much of that ends up being removed?

The other issue I had was based on the bolt being sloppy, there would be 50-60thou of brass that unsupported during firing. Is that not a concern?

You can send it, brown duck dog AT gmail DOT com (take out the spaces)

That notch is my thread relief plus is a result of my setup (meaning I squared the back of the chamber and the throat, which requires timing the action) and then I cut that cone we're talking about wrong and had to set everything back. Good eye ;) Remember, that was my first barrel I ever cut.

The cone is really a 65 degree cut (65 degree on both sides gives you your 130 total cut) you make a series of cuts going deeper and deeper until you hit the .625 total diameter. It's not a steep cut at all.

Yes, then cut your chamber not paying attention to that cut. You could measure your headspace and cut the chamber then the cone if you'd prefer, order makes no difference.

Yes, .200 seems to be the unsupported case number that you never want to go above…I don't want to ever get any where close to that number but that's the number I've been told to stay under by someone way smarter than me.

Without having any previous 'hands-on' experience with this action, I'd think there are too many parts. Looks to be a bolt action set-up in the fashion of an AR/M16 barrel. Action, barrel, barrel extension (the 'sleeve'), and a barrel nut to secure the barrel/sleeve assembly to the action?

Agreed…except no barrel nut, it is a shouldered barrel.
