Securing a handgun ???

Assuming one was to maintain a handgun in the home for self-defense and ...
assuming that young children visit the home periodically;
What is the best way to secure a handgun so that it is readily accessible to the owner but safe from the curious hands of a child that could come across it?

There are lots of RFID assessable devices available from lock boxes at sit on your night stand or mount to your bed frame to furniture with hidden compartments. A buddy has a shelf that opens to reveal a handgun. He has the RFID transmitter hidden fob mounted on the bottom of a jar candle and only has to move the candle to a specific spot on the shelf to open.

While that's a good idea, toddlers don't always "listen" well. There's just too much at stake to rely on teaching alone. There are also legal ramifications in many states if an unsecured handgun were to fall into the wrong hands.

I settled on a steel box with a biometric cover release. It has a combination and a round security key as a back-up to the biometrics. So far, the biometric release works very well, fast & easy to use, even in the dark.
