Morning All -

Inherited my fathers mid 1960's M65DL in 7mm Rem mag and it hasn't been fired since the 70's. My plan is to make it both a heritage rifle and my go to Santa Barbara County (Wild Pig and Deer) primary rifle. I'd like to have a smith with experience with this vintage rifle, go over and check for reliability / safety / function as well as any guidance in support of my plan. I'm having a difficult time here finding a gunsmith with said experience and would be grateful for advice / suggestions.

Thanks much -

Michael

S&L rifles are about bulletproof. Just give it a good cleaning. Clean the bolt lug recesses in the receiver. Pull the bolt and soak it in Acetone 24 hours. Blow it out. Lube it with Mobil 1 0-10. Put a bit of high temp grease on the bolt lugs and sear. BTW S&L is still in business, not imported and mega $. Weatherby used the action for his first 378 BEEs. It also has a shorter bolt throw than any action w/front locking lugs. And no ! cases don't stretch in it !!!

You may also wish to change the recoil pad but don't toss the old one as S&Ls have become collectible.

Once I had a collection of them, now only the original M54 in 7x61 and custom 223 built on a Short action.

And the story continues ! That 223 (really rechambered 222) I bought. I knew I had seen it before (or one like it). Prowling my library I opened MR RIFLEMAN and there was its twin in 308 ! Lots more research to do !

I have had several Schultz and Larsens. Two of which were the wby model 56 .378s.Both of which I rebarreled to .338x378 and load to max with know issues. Same thing for the 65dl in 7mm rem, and the 54j I barreled to .257x.300wby all have had no issues. These are great firearms, your only drawback is it looks like your stuck in Cali, like me and are forced to shoot *** copper. Good shootin Sherman
