Savage tang strength

Can someone please post a picture of a Savage Accu-trigger long action with the action screws installed. I was talking to a local long range specialist and mentioned I was keen on building a long range hunting rig on a Savage 116FSS and he said they are crap the tangs are so weak you can bend them with your fingers. According to him the only action to use is the Remington 700. I asked what about the $270 ($150US) you need to spend blueprinting them. Again I was told rubbish you only need to face the action and they are perfect. As we do not have them in New Zealand (but importing is relatively cheap and feasible) I can't have a look at one to check his comments. I am intending to build a 6.5/284 or a 6.5/284 Shehane.

I think you mean the recoil lug is wimpy? (between the action and the nut) Yes it is, but it would be simple to spend $30US and get a thicker lug from fred moreo at sharp shooters supply

That guy is a quack , get a second oppinion.
The Savage recoil lug is not real good granted but I'd be willing to bet one of my balls he can't bend it with his fingers!! the problem with them is that they are stamped and arn't very consintric so they can bind up in bedding.

With the new triggers on the market for the Savages I would say they are everybit as good if not better than the new Remington 700's.
In fact I have sold a couple Rem's and replaced with Savages.

Boy, I don't know what this guy is talking about. It is my understanding that all Savage actions are pretty much the same, my 10FP with the accutrigger is not flimsy by any means. The recoil lug is not that great but as JB said they are cheap to change. I bedded the recoil lug on mine and skim bedded the action and it outshoots my buddies Rem 700 PSS that has been "trued" by a smith. He just hates it when I bring that thing to the range and outshoot his custom Remmy.

If he is talking about the tang or the lug either one both are fine. Granted I would replace the lug with a Badger, Tubb etc but the tang isn't anything to worry about in a properly bedded stock.
Find another smith an build away. I build mostly on Remmy's myself, but the only fault I can find with Savage is they do have a lot of parts and they have a bad rep (ie cheap).
But the bottom line is they make an affordable single shot action and THEY FREAKIN SHOOT!

He definitely meant tang (he was implying that when you tighten the rear action screw it would bend the tang on the action)I found this very hard to believe (but I have not seen a action out of a stock). As soon as he told me that you have to do nothing to a remington action other than face the very front of it I knew he did not know what he was talking about.
I was intending to run a surface ground aftermarket recoil lug and do away with the barrel nut and have the barrel fitted conventionally.

Chris: Thanks for the comments and I am lucky I have one of New Zealands best accuracysmiths only living around the corner from me who will handle the barrel fitting and I can sort out the rest.

...all good info... just remember every action (especially factory ones) is different, and must be "improved" accordingly... "overtightening" tang screw will stress (bend) any action to some extent, just follow torque specs... (more aftermarket parts for remmy than anything i.e. jewell triggers etc)... but it can be exciting to try something different occasionally!

subsonic, that guy knows nothing about proper bedding.

Any action that has big gaps in the bedding will bend under the load of tightening the action screws. Do the bedding and pillars properly and you better think in 100's of in-lbs before anything gives. Many times more force then you can hand torque.

The recoil lug on the savage actions will work just fine even if they are not pretty. Again, proper bedding is the key. Only time when this becomes a problem is when you start hanging 28" plus no taper barrels off the front. The action simple can't support that much weight well.

Then consider a barrel block or other form of support.
