Savage QC-BAD!!!

My son took delivery this past week of new Savage ML, loaded it up and tried to fire it. Only a very light denting of the 209 primer after two tries--two clicks, 0 Bangs!!!! He called them and the best he got was "it was dry fired here"---heads up potential users. Ther rifle is now in transit back to Savage. Will advise.

If there is a problem within the Savage system I guarantee you that Joe Degrande at Savage Arms will do everything possible to discover the problem and fix it. They have one of the best customer service departments on earth and have solved all problems that I have encountered with either of my Savage muzzleloaders even when the problem was actually caused by me. Keep us all posted.

My son bought a Savage Model 12( i know it's not muzzle loader) To my estimation the barrel was set to far by about .011. Needless to say you couldn't chamber vigin brass.

Three items were changed at Savage including the firing pin spring. Since this is his second Savage, I find it lamentable that his bolt gun had the extractor SPRING fail after five rounds.

In their defense, they have made the changes and have shipped it back to him. I will update--- as an aside he tried for 15 years to get the Elk- ML tag he now has.

I've never had much luck as a gambling man however I still for some un-known reason play the odds and with that being said I look at the ML industry like this. There are only a handfull of manufacturers out there that specialize in ML's. For Savage it has been less than a decade dabbling with the smokepole and they are certainitly not a company that I would consider to be specialist in the ML industry. That's not to say they haven't made leaps and bounds in the last 20 years with their center fire rifles and in fact I don't think you can buy a better made rifle for the money than a Savage. But when it comes to buying anything I tend to lean towards one with the best reputation. I have owned several Thomson Center ML over 30 years with one CVA & Remington thrown in for good measure. T/C has always been on par with the times and become "I think" the best in the business. I'm not saying buy a T/C and you never have any problems in fact I own two Prohunters and I had to do trigger jobs to both along with putting in a oversize hinge pin and filing down the ears on the forearms. I also had to put in a heavier hammer spring as well. Total cost for everything was about $65.00. I did everything myself. I do now have a very accurate and reliable ML.

Moral of the story is no matter who's ML you buy they all have their weeknesses that we all need to over come. I hope everything works out for you and your son. It would be a shame if this episode leaves a bad taste in his mouth and decides to never again get involved with ML's. I have had to deal with Savage in the past and they responded the way all good companies do. It's just that time is of the essance for your son and his patients are running thin.

My sons 204 Ruger came back this week. Savage called me and said there was nothing wrong with the rifle. Said they fired 10 rds through it with no problem ( so much for proper barrel break in) Seems funny to me that the new Winchester brass that wouldn't chamber before now does. Whose BSing who i didn't just get off the banna boat yesterday.
