Sounds like a great gun to start from. Since you already have it in .308 you'll just be looking at a barrel swap. I'd check out savageshooters.com and look at Northlander's classified section. You can pick up a nice match select shilen or McGowen (sp) for under $300. You may not even have to wait forever to get it.
I've got a Shilen .260 barrel sitting ready to mount up. I ordered bolt parts for my .223 12FV so I could swap out but it has been a few weeks and the mag box still hasn't come in. At this rate I may have another action to build on before the parts ship. lol
