Does the barrel nut part of the barrel need to be free floating? I just put together my B&C stock, savage long action and criterion barrel. Everything is free floated about 1 business card thick up to the barrel nut. I may open the barrel channel up a bit more but it is a light varmint contour and it may not need it...but I am not sure about the barrel nut itself. Thanks.

I usually end up with some Devcon on the nut, but usually sand it off due to the grooves trying to lock the barrel in. To me, no biggie, as long as it does not lock my barrel in.

Filling the barrel nut with clay could help as well.

Not to sound dumb but what do you mean by locking the nut up....and what exactly do you mean by filling it with clay...

Oh...are you talking about bedding the rifle? Im talking about the nut touching the stock itself. I was actually goong to see how it shot with the aluminum bedding block without bedding it first. If it shot to my needs then id be done with it. If it shot poorly, then id go ahead and get it bedded.

I put clay in the grooves and 1 wrap of painters blue tape for clearence.

Im assuming you guys mean for when you bed the rifles. I was not going to bed this rifle yet. It has an aluminum bedding block. If I get 1/2 MOA in its current form then im happy with that. If not I will procede to bed it. I just mean i am currently inletting the stock to free float the new light varmint barrel. I am not sure if the barrel nut itself is actually free fliated at the moment. Does it need to be?

When I check for floating, I run a dollar bill from tip to barrel nut and call it good if no binding.

Hope that addresses your question.

Thanks Larry. Yeah this is my first build and of course I want it to be accurate BUT at the same time I want to get out shooting. I spoke with our local gunsmith and he is busy up into December doing bedding jobs but would take my rifle then so for now I am going to finish relieving the barrel channel...slap her together and go shooting. Maybe I will get lucky with a 1/2MOA shooting rifle maybe I wont, but at least I will be shooting it before then :) Now if it shoots AWEFULL with out bedding, then there is no sense in putting extra wear on the barrel until it is bedded.
